The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign that begins on November 25th (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and ends on December 10th (International Human Rights Day). The campaign aims to raise awareness and mobilize action to prevent and respond to gender-based violence. This year's theme is "Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!" with a focus on funding initiatives that prevent and respond to gender-based violence, responding to the needs of survivors, preventing gender-based violence from occurring, and collecting data to inform policy and decision-making. In Zambia, you can get involved in the 16 Days of Activism by: 1. Wearing orange to show your support 2. Sharing information and resources on social media using hashtags like #16Days and #OrangeTheWorld 3. Participating in local events and activities, such as marches, rallies, and workshops 4. Supporting organizations that work to prevent and respond to gender-based violence 5. Reporting incidents of gender-based violence to the authorities Remember, everyone has a role to play in preventing and responding to gender-based violence. At Amathuba-Collective, we challenge unjust systems & advocate for change. Some of the ways we do this is constantly identify systemic problems & inequities, gather evidence through research (both from primary business activities and participating in other initiatives involving partners). We further raise public awareness & educate where possible. Sometimes our young people will get involved in organized protests & direct action (for instance we have been to the High Court iin support of GBV activists). We are always building coalitions for collective impact. Our goal is to address root causes of injustice, not just symptoms. It takes persistence, creativity & courage to confront entrenched power like we have in South Africa today. But meaningful progress is possible by challenging unjust systems. For Wellness Wednessday, on the 13th of November 2024, our young people visited The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation for an educational escursion. They learnt a lot about our history and some of the entrenched root causes of our socio-economic issues in Mzansi today. Ending Gender-Based Violence requires a holistic approach that goes beyond focusing solely on victims. Perpetrators must be actively engaged to appreciate the importance of a violence-free society and of creating safe environments for a sustainable future. Families, schools, workplaces, and community spaces all play a crucial role in addressing this issue. Collaboration at every level is essential to dismantle harmful norms that underpin GBV and foster change. Grassroots mobilization offers a practical pathway to realistic and lasting transformation. 🌍 There may never be enough money to stop GBV, but there are enough people to create change. As we commemorate the 16 Days of Activism in Lilongwe, Malawi, Ujamaa Pamodzi is proud to have empowered teachers from six districts through our Empowerment Transformation Training (ETT) program. We know that at the point of attack, the girl is always alone, but with the right skills, she can escape and protect herself. Boys, too, want to do the right thing—when equipped with the tools and understanding, they can become allies in the fight against GBV. Attended an enlightening Expo hosted by Bloggers Of Zambia, focusing on engaging citizens and promoting the right to freedom. As part of a civil society organization that harnesses the power of art for advocacy, I participated in a panel discussion on Artivism, Tech, and Advocacy for Social Change and Accountability. During the session, I discussed the Alliance for Community Action's use of art to demand accountability. Art serves as a powerful medium for expression and plays a key role in enhancing social accountability within communities.
