‘Working hard is a talent.’ Sir Alex Ferguson. At Hytro, we draw inspiration from the world of sport. In today’s workplace there is often a tension between advocating work/life balance and celebrating the grind. The truth, as with many things, lies somewhere in the middle. In sports, relying solely on talent is a thing of the past. Countless naturally gifted athletes never reach their potential because they fail to put in the work. As Roger Federer said in his recent Dartmouth address, “Effortless is a myth.” He reached the top by outworking his opponents. The necessity of hard work is a given in sports, so why should it be any different in the workplace? For a start-up to succeed in 99.9% of all cases (stats not verified) it will take a level of focus, discipline, commitment and consistency for a prolong period from the founding team. That’s the reality of the early years and at times it can be draining. Is this healthy or something to aspire to? Obviously not. Is it necessary? I believe so. This intense period requires a superhuman effort from both founders and core team members, all driven by a shared belief and purpose. Like Alex Ferguson, I'm a firm believer in working hard and view it through the lens of other acquired skills. To be clear when I say working hard, I don't mean putting in long hours. That is often the reality but is not the core of what working hard represents. The determination, resilience, and relentless optimism to find a way to through any given obstacle epitomises the sentiment. And at Hytro, we believe working hard is a talent. Another Yonah Weiss challenge is nearly finished, and I am beat and exhausted. I am beat in a variety of ways: 👉 worst overall challenge results ever 👉 lost traction compared to pre-challenge activity. 👉 commented on 10x more post than the comments received. My Challenge experience could have me feeling like the last player taken in the NFL draft, appropriately nicknamed “Mr. Irrelevant”. However, I’m exhausted, because in the past 2 weeks I’ve: 👉 looked at 25+ deals 👉 funded 2 deals, 👉 might make a couple more offers 👉 attended a planning dept meeting 👉 met with a guy building storage units 👉 attended 3 board meetings 👉 attended a weekend ORLA conference 👉 moved my daughter 👉 had dinner with our mayor 👉 had a meeting re: investment strategy 👉 posted every day of the challenge 👉 spent 16 hours driving 👉 attended a NAMI meeting to help a friend suffering from mental illness. 👉 and picked up a few chess strategies from ⚠Dan Fradenburgh⚠ Glad I don’t have to depend on LI to feel I’m accomplishing things in life. This week our team clinched the top spot for the first time, despite being small and mighty with five members against the typical eight.
