AI is not new - we've been doing it in #Earthobservation for decades! But the scene is definitely shifting - and fast! What's the coolest geoAI thing you've come across in the last six months? Bonus points if it's accessible for non-tech users. 🚨 Real-world environmental monitoring with AI What happens when you use #AI to monitor fish assemblages, over consecutive years, with the purpose of detecting potential impacts from uranium mining to a World Heritage site? 🏞 Read our recently accepted peer-reviewed paper in the Marine and Freshwater Research journal to find out 📜 Some quick highlights 🎆 🎥 Underwater cameras are used by the Supervising Scientist in #KakaduNationalPark to monitor fish in channel billabongs. ✏ We annotated more than 80k bounding boxes around 23 tropical freshwater fish taxa🐟 in underwater images. 🧠 Using #Azure Custom Vision a deep neural network was trained to identify fish. 🕰 We compared fish counts made by trained humans and AI using three years of monitoring videos. 📶Discussion of the advantages and disadvantages when using an automated fish monitoring system and interpretation of the results made with an ecology and data science lens.
