A recent report from OPERA America, Understanding Opera's New Audiences, reveals that many New-to-Opera attendees first engage with opera through recordings before experiencing a live performance. In fact, the report highlights that 50% of all opera audiences, including newcomers, first encounter opera by listening to or watching recordings—often during childhood. This raises an important question for our sector: Are we doing enough to create high-quality digital content and recordings for the young audiences of today? What is the Canadian classical and art music sector doing today to establish a presence in audio recordings and digital media for young people? What are the relationships that need to be built between broadcasters and the arts sector that can help sustain orchestras, opera companies and small concert presenters in the years to come? If we don't invest in reaching young people where they are—beyond the concert halls and theatres—how can we ensure a future audience for opera and classical music in these spaces when they are able to buy tickets themselves? #OperaCanada #ClassicalMusic #CanadianOpera #ArtSong #CanadaArts #CanadianCulture #CanadianMusic CBC TVO Patrimoine canadien -- Canadian Heritage

Friday Arts. At Springboard Opera, our things are Re-inventing the Opera Idea and Supporting Emerging Artists. Cool… On the face of it, that would seem to be about (say) presenting opera in new and innovative ways in unexpected and surprising places to people who would not usually participate in Opera. Got all of that? It IS a bit of a headful for a Friday! And what of those of us who are not blessed with singing voices? Are we doomed to sit on the sidelines as Friends and Ticket Buyers? Well … as it turns out, you can if that is your thing… but otherwise, a resounding NO! To achieve our stated outcomes, a new kind of arts organisation is needed. One that is willing to challenge the paradigm and take advantage of the opportunities thrown up by the 21st century. Answering questions like: - why does Opera have to be done the way that it is? - What could a different future look like? And ... - Can we create a sustainable model for opera (and the arts generally) that is not so heavily reliant on Government? Paradigm-busting thoughts!!! Springboard Opera, the 21st century opera company, is being built on new ways of financing itself, new ways of ensuring all stakeholders get properly rewarded for what they do, new ways to use technology in everything, new strategies to achieve outcomes… A New Way of thinking about itself. Because if it does not do that it is a 20th century opera company pretending to be a 21st Century Opera Company. This is Springboard Opera … if you’re up for a 21st century adventure, up for creating something new, exciting and paradigm-busting to support young people, jump over to our website https://lnkd.in/gXgNVTGg, and get involved. Here’s a sneak peek at the poll conclusions: · Did you know young people are more open to attending opera performances than their older peers? · Some 61% of 18-34-year-olds say they would consider attending an opera performance in the future. · The majority would expect opera tickets in London to set them back £75 Be the first to explore these findings and their implications for audience development and the future of opera. Friday Arts … Springboard Opera had its first night out a-month-and-a-bit ago. The first Springboard Opera Thing! And this is what it looked like on the night… https://lnkd.in/gWzHSiA4 The first ever Springboard Opera Gala in fabulous Brisbane. And in the spirit of doing it differently, it was opera, but not opera. Some, but not all, of the Springboard Opera young (and talented) human beans were introduced to Brisbane in a fabulous star-studded night of music, theatre and general cool-ness. If you missed out, you’ll have to wait for the next Springboard Thing. And because no man is an island – thanks for the words, John Donne – we are not so much creating an arts organisation as a 21st century Arts Ecosystem that thrives on innovation. Ecosystems imply lots of interconnectedness. Between all the parts. Side-to-Side and Front-to-Back. So the innovation needs to flow Side-to-Side and Front-to-Back. And to make this work, all those parts matter equally. One of the things that was said at the Gala was “Singing optional”. That is because we need skills and INNOVATION everywhere. And with that – a bit of fractured Dr Suess, this time – Oh, the places We’ll go! If you are up for a bit of Amaze-balls stuff… Come down and see us at https://lnkd.in/gXgNVTGg – it is going to be WILD! We're excited to share a 63% growth in new monthly users on iOS in Europe, a month after DMA came into force! The number of monthly new users of Opera for iOS across Europe has increased a substantial 63% from February to March 2024: France recorded the most significant gain of 146%, with Germany next at 57%, followed by Spain with 50%, Poland with 45%, and Italy with 20%. Also, the number of Opera for iOS organic users who have selected Opera as their default browser has risen 39% across Europe between March 3rd and April 4th. The increase reflects how effective the DMA ballot has been in allowing users to opt out of pre-installed browsers, and instead select their favorite as the default.
