A lot of founders are chasing investors, when they should be chasing customers. In 2015 I bootstrapped a SAAS platform with one partner and $1800. in nine months, we built it to over $20,000 MRR with over 1000 active users monthly. The best part was the two of us retained 100% ownership in the company. We spent all of our time chasing customers, getting feedback from active users, surveying focus groups, and delivering impeccable, customer service and updates. a few years later, we were forced to shut down the service… That’s another story for another post. I got a call from a portfolio company today that has received offers for add-on capital in their pre-seed round. It’s a significant amount of money, but the company doesn’t need it. They are cash flow positive, growing quickly, and have 18 months of runway even if all revenue stopped tomorrow. They are in a prime position to choose their investors for any future round if things continue as they are. My advice was to not take the money and just get to the next inflection point, which could be as soon as three months. When VCs try to force-feed startups with capital, the only ones who benefit are the VCs themselves.
