Today marks the beginning of #TransgenderAwarenessWeek. This week leading up to Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20 is an opportunity for all of us to come together to understand the many challenges faced by the members of trans and non-binary communities and to educate ourselves on how to become stronger forces of support, advocacy and alliance. Did you know that over the last ten years, the Human Rights Campaign has recorded 372 deaths from violence of victims who were transgender? At least 36 have died of violence in the last year alone which is a slight increase over the previous year. The number of victims is likely higher because many deaths often aren’t reported or are misreported. We must see #transgenderrights as #humanrights.
Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance #TDOR, an annual observance that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence that year.

Here is a dedicated resource guide for navigating today’s conversations about the transgender community. Liam Paschall has put together a comprehensive document that could help with those hard conversations during the holiday season. As a parent of a trans or gender-diverse child, it’s helpful to be prepared in advance. With the holidays around the corner, people will gather for work, community and family functions. Questions that are easy to answer aren’t so easy when you parent a child who doesn’t fit into the standard binary. Arriving prepared, it will be easier to navigate these discussions, if your family chooses. #Transgender #GenderDiverse #HardConversations #BePrepared #Educate #Empathy #Empower #Support #TransPARENT Tiny Ripples➡️Waves➡️Tsunami of Love🌊❤️

I think I'm going to start posting this daily. I’ve updated my comprehensive resource guide with critical new information to help transgender people, families, and allies respond to harmful misconceptions and navigate today’s challenges. The latest updates include: 💫Responses to Arguments About Trans Rights: 🔸Why is everyone “suddenly” trans? 🔸Puberty blockers and gender-affirming care explained. 🔸Restroom access myths debunked. 💫Empathy-Driven Analogies: 🔸Designed to help people truly understand what it’s like to walk in our shoes. 🔸Relatable for conversations with people willing to listen and learn. While much of this information is typically part of my paid speaking engagements and training sessions, we’re living in an incredibly dangerous time for the transgender community. We need help. We need allies. We need understanding. 💫Spotlight on the Who’s Making News Project: This initiative tracks data on child sexual assault offenders and debunks harmful narratives. Key findings show the majority of offenders are individuals in trusted positions (e.g., religious leaders, educators)—not transgender people or drag performers. While much of this information is typically shared (in a different format) in my paid speaking engagements and training sessions, I wanted to create something simple to serve as an ongoing resource. Please: 1️⃣Review the document. 2️⃣Learn from it. 3️⃣Use it and share it widely - at work, at school, with your family and friends. Send it via email, share it on all of your social media platforms, print it and put it on desks or send it via snail mail. Access the updated resource in PDF and PPT versions. See links below. PDF: https://lnkd.in/e5eSDheC PPT: https://lnkd.in/eMb-j4re The free website is also published. I plan to upgrade to a paid website if I feel it's being used and is providing value to others. Our community is under attack, but together, we can fight back with truth, empathy, and action. As mentioned, while much of this information is typically part of my paid speaking engagements and training sessions, we’re living in an incredibly dangerous time for the transgender community. We need help. We need allies. We need understanding.

Holding my trans loved ones close to my heart today ❤️ #TDOR is a solemn occasion that asks us, to paraphrase Mother Jones, to mourn the dead and fight like hell for the living. A day that asks us to remember the names, faces, memories, demands, and dreams of our trans siblings who have been taken from us by physical violence, state violence, and hopelessness. Two simple places to start for cis allies on this #TDOR: 1. Give trans folks material, financial support! If you aren't connected to a mutual aid network in your community, consider donating to OUR SPOT KC, WiNc (westindconnection.com), transanta.com, blackandpink.org/donate, your local LGBTQIA+ inclusion network, or search #TransCrowdfund on your social media platform of choice and give money directly to folks who need it. 2. Most of us have been socialized and marinated in heteronormativity and cisnormativity, so it is our responsibility to start creating new neural pathways. Get used to sharing your pronouns. Read books by trans and genderqueer authors. Follow trans creators on social media. Watch shows and movies with trans and genderqueer actors. Read reporting from trans journalists - you can start with this beautiful essay from Erin Reed and Zooey Zephyr: https://lnkd.in/ggbNyeDg "There are no golden magic words to convince someone struggling to survive in an ever-darkening world to stay with us. That's not what we're offering. What we're offering is our unwavering commitment to fight like fell for you and the people you love. If hope for a brighter future isn't enough to keep you going, then stay because there are people fighting back -- people who refuse to let go. While we can't stop the ocean from flooding in, we can stand, arms outstretched, catching everyone it tries to sweep away. And when the tides change, as they always do, they'll see us still standing, as we always have been -- arm in arm, just like those who came before us."
Today, we honor the lives of transgender individuals lost to violence and discrimination. This solemn day reminds us of the resilience and strength within the trans community while underscoring the urgent need to combat hate and injustice. As we reflect, let’s also amplify trans voices, advocate for trans rights, and celebrate their invaluable contributions to our communities. 🕯️🏳️⚧️ #TDOR2024 #TransDayOfRemembrance #TransRightsAreHumanRights #OurSpotKC
