Ontario Paralegal Association’s Post

FLSP Licence Update: A virtual meeting was held today on FLSP Licence and its impact on insurance premium. It was attended by Roy Bornmann, Policy Counsel, LSO, Matthew Wylie, Policy Counsel, Michelle Lomazzo, Paralegal Bencher, Danish Yusuf, Zen Insurance and myself. The FLSP program for P1 licensees will be delivered by Fanshawe College starting Jan 2025. It is a one semester online program, with a 40 hrs field placement. Paralegals who graduate from this program will earn a certificate and then register/apply to LSO for permission to provide services as FLSP. I have made the submissions that since the FLSP has a narrow scope of practice and will be within the purview of the P1 licence, the insurance premium should remain intact with no increase for those who may provide FLSP services. We look forward to coordinate with other insurer providers also.

Is anyone fron the OPA advocating for Paralegals such as myself who also holds the Law Clerk Diploma with the full scope of Family Law to be grandfathered?

I personally don't see a lot out of the FLSP license. I was hopeful when the Bankalo Report came out and it was originally adopted. A careful reading of the permissible practice areas just seems to me to be a pipeline for more family law clients to go to lawyers, as many of them will too quickly become out of scope for us. I don't know how others feel.

Well, questions needs to be asked. How can one semester prepare anyone to provide Family Legal Services to the public? I see this as being a dis-service and a complete disaster waiting to happen. I have also noticed that most Paralegals are not speaking up and asking pertinent questions. Of course this is my observation on this platform. I, however, will advocate on my own behalf if the members of the OPA does not. I did not graduate double cohort to remain silent about this. Please remember that some of us voted for you.
