Great conversation today on integrating culture into the hiring process. How does it show up in *your* selection process? Typical... * The hiring manager considers culture after the fact; points to social events and office amenities as an indication of great culture * The hiring manager asks multiple people to interview candidates to get their 'gut feel' for whether the person will fit in * The hiring manager goes into the hiring process focused on their own needs (what "we're" looking for), rather than articulating the opportunity the role represents to a top talent candidate Better... * The leadership team explicitly defines the culture (mission, values, beliefs, strategy, practices, behaviors), identifies non-negotiable behaviors, and articulates an EVP (employee value proposition) * Leaders work with their talent leaders to incorporate culture into role definitions, job descriptions, job postings, career site messaging * Talent team members develop a selection process that includes explicit evaluation of culture drivers and creates a people-first hiring experience * The team leverages behavioral science to build a talent-based job profile for the role Suggestions you might have some work to do: * You aren't sure how many interviews you need to * You aren't sure who should do the interviewing * Your job descriptions are not current or don't include culture drivers * Your selection committee doesn't meet to coordinate who asks what * You are interviewing without an interview guide or behavioral target * Your leaders argue they're too busy to prepare an interview plan (and don't realize that the cost of getting this wrong is 4-27x salary) * Your leaders argue that an interview guide is too rigid and encroaches on their ability to 'be authentic'; they choose to take the interview 'where it goes' (talk about a bias-laden minefield that makes it difficult, if not impossible, to fairly compare candidates! ...sorry, I might have some strong feelings on this one believing you can be authentic and organized) Thanks for helping with this session Jeni Cleveland, MBA, Robin Malmanger, Neeka Robertson, and Wendy S.
