Model for new development, if they can get the cost down? https://lnkd.in/e4ikpKYS When Gobuty started the design process for Hunters Point, it was imperative the homes be able to withstand Category 5 hurricanes. It’s the first residential development to get a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) net-zero certification in the world, according to the US Green Building Council. Each of the three-story homes are designed like this: The ground floor is a garage designed with flood vents to drain rising water. The living spaces start on the second floor, which is intentionally built 16 feet above sea level. From the roof to its foundation, steel straps secure the entire structure. Solar panels are attached to the roofs’ raised vertical seams to prevent them from flying off.

As Florida faces increasingly destructive hurricanes, resilient architecture is proving its worth. In Mexico Beach, Florida, a unique dome-shaped home called "Golden Eye," owned by Margaret Clayton, withstood the devastating 2018 Hurricane Michael while surrounding homes were destroyed. Built by Monolithic Domes, Clayton’s home was minimally damaged despite the category 5 storm's 160 mph winds, highlighting the effectiveness of dome designs. This year, hurricanes Helene and Milton have again tested storm-resilient homes, with hundreds killed and billions of dollars in damage reported. However, dome homes and other rounded structures continue to perform exceptionally well. Landolf Rhode-Barbarigos from the University of Miami highlights how the aerodynamic shape of these homes reduces wind pressure, making them highly resistant to extreme weather. Builders like Deltec have been creating these homes for decades, and their designs have survived some of the most powerful hurricanes, including Irma, Michael, and Milton. Steve Linton, president of Deltec, explains that the round design distributes wind forces evenly, much like the spokes of a wheel, and that Southern yellow pine—a stronger wood—is used in construction for added resilience. Deltec homes are now available in pre-designed models, making hurricane-resistant homes more accessible and affordable. Monolithic Domes, led by Gary Clark, continues to see growing interest in their concrete and steel domes. These homes not only withstand high winds but are also energy-efficient and can offer long-term savings. However, challenges remain, including difficulties in obtaining financing for unconventional designs. Architect Elizabeth Plater Zyberk adds that the true challenge is managing both wind and flooding during hurricanes. Raised homes, like dome structures on stilts, offer better protection against floods, a growing threat with climate change. The conversation around resilient architecture is evolving, but experts agree that more needs to be done to integrate these designs into everyday housing to better protect communities from future storms. In the last few weeks, I have been following the Park Fire (NE of Chico, CA) which is now about 430 K acres in footprint. One positive sign I am seeing is that the structure count for destroyed homes is less than 400. Looking back at the Camp Fire which engulfed Paradise, CA (directly east of Chico, CA) in November 2018 over 10,000 homes were destroyed in a fire of only about 153K acres. With updated building codes in 2008 for Wildfire Urban Interface (WUI) landscapes in CA a higher percentage of the newer homes are making it through these fires (versus older homes, most homes that were destroyed in Paradise, CA were built in the 1970's). Of course there are multiple factors, fire suppression, thinning and other forest fire mitigation efforts, and land use in the fire footprint. So, you could argue that the Park Fire may have many beneficial outcomes for future conditions. Hopefully newer construction built in 2025 going forward in the WUI will be more resilient to this hazard in the decades to come.

Hurricane Beryl spins up to a Category 5 in 48 hours as the earliest strongest hurricane in the Caribbean. Ocean temperatures at August levels in June are contributing to potentially the most active hurricane season on record. Hopefully we don't see any catastrophic impacts this year but planning for in building construction is a growing priority beyond South Florida! I help architects, builders, and owners select, specify, and detail luxury residential hurricane glazing systems without manufacturer or dealer biases. From just one hour to as many hours as you need a glazing expert for your project. I also give classes in all aspects of hurricane windows and doors on glass aesthetics and energy performance, manufacturer product overviews, detailed installation planning and best practices, and understanding hurricane product approvals. #construction #architecture #design #luxurymiamirealestate #caribbeanrealestate #miamirealestate #luxurydesign #luxuryarchitecture #windowsanddoors #architecturedesign #coastalhomes #builders #beachhomes #coastalliving #designers #luxuryhomes #architectureanddesign #contemporarydesign #architecturelovers

My home did not lose power on the dirty side of Hurricane Milton. The wind speed on the backend opposite side increased the wind speed, trimmed tree branches and caused power to go out.
