After years in the design field, I've learned that these are the essential traits every designer needs. 👉 Storytelling: Strong storytelling and communication skills are essential, especially when starting out. 👉 Design Eye: Yes, having a keen design eye is crucial. Being good at design is fundamental for a product designer. 👉 Passion: Curiosity and passion matter. Extracurricular activities can be a great indicator of this. 👉 Adaptability: Potential for growth and a sense of curiosity are key. How adaptable is the individual? 👉 Excitement: Overall enthusiasm and positive energy are important. What else do you think I should consider? Let's discuss it! 🧵 #Hiring #Design #ProductDesign #CareerGrowth #Recruitment #UX #UI

Everyone thinks beautifully designed visuals will get your first UX role But here is the hard truth about getting your first UX gig Beautiful visuals are not enough What hiring managers are really looking for when hiring a junior designer is: The ability to learn The ability to adapt Pro-activity and initiative How you deal with changes How you overcome challenges You must be able to demonstrate them within your portfolio On each project study case, you must highlight How each project is shaping and improving you What are the things you self-started without being asked to do What were the key learnings and how you can apply them to new projects What were the struggles and challenges, and how did you overcome and learn from them What were the unexpected changes along the way you had to deal with, and how you adapted Demonstrating these can show managers that even if you don’t have the desired experience, you can get up to speed quickly and learn fast This is what matters How about you? Any tips on getting your first UX design role? Share them in the comments! #uxdesign #uxhunt #userexperience #uxjobhunt

Dear aspiring User Experience Designers, As you embark on your journey, it's crucial to keep in mind certain aspects regarding your portfolio: 1. A masterfully crafted portfolio follows a fundamental structure: An engaging introduction, comprehensive biographical information, insightful case studies, and additional information that paints a holistic picture of who you are. 2. Your portfolio is essentially your narrative, encapsulated within a series of mini-narratives (your case studies). These smaller tales should vividly illustrate your ability to comprehend user needs and design solutions that meet and exceed those expectations. Each story should demonstrate the evolution of your design thinking, research, and concept iterations culminating in the final solution. Remember, a portfolio is more than just showcasing the end product. 3. Your portfolio is a testament to your capability of contributing to a team in designing the optimal solution for a customer problem, ensuring timely delivery. It's tangible proof of your ability to adhere to deadlines, collaborate, and deliver results. 4. It's crucial to realize that your portfolio isn't crafted for your eyes, but primarily for hiring managers and others involved in the recruitment process. Your goal is to convince them of your ability to excel in the role they're hiring for and kindle their interest in collaborating with you. Remember, your portfolio is your brand, let it speak volumes about your skills, creativity, and dedication. #uxdesign #uxhiring #designportfolios

🧩 There’s no single formula for a perfect UX portfolio. Every hiring manager seeks something different—some want to see how we handle real-world constraints, while others look for creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. I recently got valuable advice from two senior UX designers with very different perspectives: 💡 One emphasized the need to highlight how we tackle 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 and demonstrate 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 in case studies. 💡 The other highlighted hiring someone based on their 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 and how creatively they solved problems when there were 𝐧𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬! This made me realize the value of balancing real work with passion projects in a portfolio. Both offer opportunities to demonstrate our problem-solving, storytelling, and UX skills in different ways. #uxdesign #uxportfolio #userexperience #storytelling #productdesign #passionprojects

Why being a UX generalist can kill your career As a UX Designer you need to know a lot about a lot. Right? Well, it turns out that a jack of all trades is a master of none. You'll only get so far with a superficial understanding of various areas. In fact, generalists can quickly become obsolete in the fast-moving and specialized world of UX. Why? - Specialization pays - You stay up-to-date - You build credibility Clients will spend big bucks on experts in a certain area of UX, not generalists. Don't be the one who tries to do it all. Instead, focus on your strengths and seek to specialize in an area. You'll be much more highly valued and in demand. In other words, be a specialist. Or be left behind #design #hiring #uxdesign

I am currently reviewing 300+ designer profiles for a new job opening we have, and one thing that clearly stands out is how much visual design quality matters in today's (very) saturated market. My recommendation for everyone looking for a job right now is to go the extra mile and invest time and energy into crafting your portfolio, website or self-presentation well. Meticulous visual communication matters and also tells a lot about your attitude and how much you care. Even if you are, for example, a UX designer or UX researcher and visual design or visual communication is not your strength, hire someone to do it for you. The ROI on such an investment will be huge. If you do not do it, you are putting yourself at a major disadvantage – and that can be a very costly mistake. #design #hiring #market #insights

It makes me sad to see so many designers out there struggling with visual design. 🥲 Yes, the form shouldn't go above function, but how the product looks significantly influences how we perceive the product itself. That's why design-led companies are winning. Just getting the basics right can improve the visuals significantly. Learning the principles of visual hierarchy, typography, and layout will take you a long way. As a hiring manager, even when hiring a UX designer role, a nice-looking portfolio will give you an advantage over the others. Act accordingly.
