Singular XQ's friend Kai has described how we approach design at SXQ--not all of our designers focus on visual design. They focus on complex system design. I would say this is a return to the original "business value of design"---because Jobs was keen on the visual, that is the part that people came away with when McKinsey published the Business Value of Design, which created an influx of people with visual design training in print culture flooding into software. I have known design leaders with top salaries talking about things like widows and orphans in responsive design--and they are unaware of the complexity of controlling for widows and orphans in responsive layouts---and using other similar principles of print design. They are agnostic to tech solutions, even though the tech solution impacts the front-end design dramatically. They have no idea why you need to know the number of APIs feeding into a container app to design well for it. They have no idea why their sketched solution should be rejected in terms of feasibility and effort. Nor do they know how to generate an alternative solution that incorporates those needs because they think they don't have to. Technology design is cross-functional. Full stop. They can neither generate empathy for nor understand the needs of the engineers and then complain that the engineers won't allow them to be part of the solution. They show contempt for "code heads," "devs," or "eng." To which I say, so why are you in software? Kai's brilliant answer with his typical laser-sharp way of expressing his ideas is not a new development but an older one that comes back into focus now that many of the elements of "UX design" are becoming automated and being taken over by AI-driven design libraries. I hope that it takes root and drives change.
I just had a brief exchange with Marc Hemeon over a statement he made about how Design applies broadly beyond its visual paradigm. From that perspective, I am fascinated with how we're evolving into a more complete notion of designing solutions, products, and experiences. This is a renaissance of sorts. #design #futuredesign #evolution

Can your design solution be a game-changer? 🦢 Design is not just about making a profit – it's about making a positive impact. This includes everything from making small adjustments in our daily lives to solving issues on a global scale. As part of the Danish Design Award relaunch, we've identified five key values that all design solutions must embody to create meaningful change. Next up is our third design value: Lead the way 🧭 Breaking free from outdated lifestyles and reinventing new modes and models requires more than iterative changes. It demands pioneering new perspectives, fostering engagement, and cultivating a more profound understanding to shape a new world. But worldbuilding can be many things. The fundamental question is: Does the design solution show a new, original way to drive positive change? Does it inspire change, offer new perspectives, and enable us all to do good? Ready to disrupt the status quo? Discover the rest of the design values and submit your design solution here: https://lnkd.in/ejMGVgN The Danish Design Award is a collaboration between DDC – Danish Design Center & Design denmark. #danishdesignaward #danishdesignaward24

Hi, in this little video, I share our design ethos at Gustav Concept. Once a product is effortless simple in form and function, it's perfect. Simple is the end point of a design journey, not the start. Let me know your thoughts.
"Simple is not the starting point of a design journey, it is the end point. There's nothing you want to add to the product, and there's nothing else you want to leave out. That kind of refined design is the ultimate goal any product should achieve." – Christian Pistauer, Co-Founder of Gustav In the video below, Christian explores the beauty of refined design—where simplicity and functionality come together. At Gustav, we create every product with this philosophy, ensuring each detail has a purpose. And if you're attending Orgatec in Cologne, visit us at Halle 8, Stand E071 to see it in action! Design needs a saviour?! Heck no! This was the topic of the debate I participated in as part of Design Outlook 2024 earlier this year. My brilliant debating partner Bridgette Engeler and I fiercely argued that no, design doesn’t need a saviour. Design needs designers. Given the hurdles we faced (eye surgery for me, international travel for Bridgette), I think we nailed it! Shoutout to Brad Alphonso and Sue Izmir — it takes two to tango, and it was a blast sharing the stage with you both. Trudi Boatwright, you were an incredible moderator! The party poppers and squeaky toys? Brilliant touch! Grant Show and the Design Outlook team, thanks for building such a strong design community. Now some apologies I have to make: David Carson, Jessica Walsh, Dieter Rahm and Tim Brown – much respect, but sorry you didn’t meet my “saviour” criteria! Sam Altman - sorry I stole your joke, you know the one. Canva - sorry about the gag 🕊️ Check out the debate for yourself https://lnkd.in/gqa7quks Last but not least, big thanks to my crew at Cognizant for their full support. PS. this was my first time up on a stage of this scale.
