We’re excited to announce that CUMAC is one of the first-ever recipients of the Food Security Access Fund, a collaborative, cross-sector fund led by The Tepper Foundation and New Jersey Office of the Food Security Advocate. This support will help us unlock additional funding opportunities and grow our work to fight hunger and its root causes through a holistic and trauma-informed approach that provides groceries and basic necessities to families and individuals in need. What does Helping Hands Food Bank do besides provide food? How can our donors know we use their donations responsibly and effectively to serve the local community? How much of a difference do our volunteers really make? Who uses the food bank? How many people use the food bank and is the need increasing or decreasing? At Helping Hands Food Bank, our goal is to be as transparent as possible with our donors, volunteers, community partners, and the public. Our 2023 Impact Report is one way we report the data and stories we have collected over the previous year to illustrates the impact Helping Hands has on Skagit County as a whole and individuals. By sharing accurate information about the need in Skagit County and trends in the services offered at Helping Hands, we can continue to partner together in the mission to nourish our community with kindness and respect without judgement. We now estimate that we would need to spend twice what we originally budgeted to spend on food this year to meet the ongoing need. This leaves us with a critical gap between the amount of food people in our community need and the amount of food we can provide. Referring people to other food pantries is not the answer, since they are all facing the same critical challenges we are. It is a very difficult and disturbing truth for all of us. While we are deeply concerned, we remain hopeful. We have a generous community, tremendous volunteers, and a skilled and committed staff. Together we can make sure people in our community have the most basic and critical of all needs met and that our neighbors don’t have to experience hunger.
