Though I’ve been in the visual art world forever, the full time meanderings in the education and mental health portions of my life have always been intertwined with aspects of creativity. Neither facets could possibly have existed without affecting and being affected by the other. Recently, while completing more work on my archives, I discovered a long lost copy of a dramatic play I had written for children. Music and such prepared dialogues I often used as catalysts for discussions. Written in 1985, “Pauly” is a play whose story is fictional, but the concept is very much based on some of the real experiences encountered in my work. It speaks not only to the raw power of childhood friendships but also to the depth of concern children share with and about each other. Pauly is a one act play of interconnected yet separate vignettes. Each element of Pauly’s construct depends on targeted stage lighting rather than sets. Older children who are not yet teens are the focus. The flow of time passing (from darkness to light) rises to a crescendo that children well understand. It’s always surprising what they know and have to deal with that we adults often fail to grasp. The content and script of this play exist for the sole purpose of post-play discussions and the basic tenet of childhood awareness of “others” - and the need to know that their friends are OK. The following link will take you to a "work in progress" copy of the the full play script: https://lnkd.in/ewRcy7rz

"After teaching and leading barre3 studio teams all over the state of Oklahoma for nine years, I took ownership of barre3 OKC 18 days before closing it due to COVID-19. To have survived, overcome and even evolved our studio through that has by far been my biggest obstacle." How we talk about social emotional development must be contextualized, knowingly. Educators must not run away from the racialized contexts that Black children and their families experience forbidding them from being free in thought, movement, learning, play, and resistance. As we engage at the beginning of an academic year, educator professional knowledge must include discussions of race. This clip is a reflection of the burden and fear of Black families carry in raising children. Life and entertainment co-exist.Engage.

Ep. 64: Changing the Narrative in TV with Andy Mundy-Castle Until relatively recently, the phenomenon of white British families fostering Black children of West African descent was unknown. That's changing, thanks to advocacy by the late, great rapper TY, reporting by Symeon Brown, and the Africa International Film Festival - AFRIFF and BAFTA award-winning documentary “White Nanny, Black Child." This practice started in the 1960s and continued into the 1990s. These fostered children are now parents, uncles, aunties, and maybe, in some cases, grandparents. Some of them were public figures. This experience left an indelible mark on the identities of many of them. In this episode, Christabel N., speaks with Andy Mundy-Castle, the film's director. They discuss making the film, navigating the British media industry, and what creators should consider when telling a sensitive, important story.
