We recently hosted a brilliant gin-tasting event with our clients at The Old Sail Loft Distillery, home to The Channel Islands Liquor Co. 🍸 We tried a selection of local gins and rums whilst learning about the insights, history and craft of small-batch distilling. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with our clients and enjoy a gin or two!

Have you heard of Auchlossan Whisky? Chances are the answer is no, and the reason is that they have just launched their inaugural release! It's a wonderful dram, launched in collaboration with Lost Loch Spirits Ltd and the Whisky Teuchter. • P A T I E N C E • Everybody at Ellers Farm Distillery | Certified B Corp® is eagerly awaiting the day we can open these casks and officially release our single malt whisky 🥃 Our new make spirit, created using a specially created wash from Theakston Brewery, is one of the best new make’s I’ve ever tasted, with notes of caramel, chocolate 🍫 and banana 🍌. Testament to the state of the art distilling equipment, our distillery team and the fantastic wash that is similar to a porter style beer 🍺 Good things come to those who wait, and here’s why we need to wait 3 years and 1 day for our whisky to mature; •🪵 Flavour Development: Over time, the whisky absorbs the flavour from the first fill bourbon barrels from the USA 🇺🇸 creating the rich complex flavours that we all love. • 🫗Smoothness: Maturation allows the harsh edges to mellow out, resulting in a smoother, more enjoyable liquid 🥃 • ✍🏻 Legal requirement: By law, whisky must be aged for a minimum of three years and one day (any guesses why the one day!?) … only then, can it officially be called whisky 👮🏼♂️ We simply cannot wait. And with the best equipment, team, wash and casks, we like to think our whisky is certainly going to win a fair few awards 🥇🏆 #ellersfarmdistillery

In the 1980s and 1990s, dozens of Scotch Whisky Distilleries closed their doors. Some, like The Imperial, for ever. Lots were demolished. The Casks of the Scotch Whisky they made, they didn't get demolished, somebody bought the. Who this 'somebody' is, is just one of the many Scotch Whisky Secrets. There are rather a lot of them. The complex story of 'who owns what Cask' is extremely complicated and I won't go into it, here. Mainly, because I don't know. Nobody does! What Casks are left? Geographically, where are these Casks? How many Casks are there, all over Scotland? To be Scotch it HAS to be in Scotland. Suffice to say, the 'Scotch Cask Transfer' saga of 'who owns what' makes the 'who pays the wages of a Loanee Professional Footballer?' look relatively straightforward. What IS clear though is that the 'Old and Rare' aspect of Scotch Whisky is absolutely huge. Nobody's prepared to say HOW huge. Because nobody knows. #ScotchWhiskyTruths
#Cask88 is incredibly proud to announce that our 1998 single cask bottling, “The Bothy”, from the lost Imperial distillery, has been awarded a remarkable 98/100, an Outstanding Gold Medal at the illustrious International Wine & Spirits Competition, beating off hundreds of competitors to achieve one of the highest scores possible this year. The Imperial Distillery is a fabled, "ghost" distillery after closing its doors in 1998, to eventually be demolished in 2013 for the new Dalmunach distillery - established in 2015. This elegant, bright, and exceptional whisky is a true testament to Speyside whisky, and we were blessed to have one of the last ever casks from this fantastic distillery. I was honored to be interviewed by Susannah Skiver Barton for this piece. Although I hadn't expected my view to be among the few positive takeaways, after reviewing this insightful industry analysis, I agree: The craft distilling landscape has certainly shifted since the pandemic. When Lee and I started Durham Distillery in 2013, we did it with the full intent of being a unicorn – an American craft distillery focused on creating delicious and differentiated gins. Many craft distillers, however, whether for revenue needs with aged whiskeys or hoping to take a renaissance approach, wanted to do it all. But from a marketer's lens, that broad approach dilutes your brand identity and positioning. As the adage goes, "if you're doing everything, you're known for nothing." Now, without easy access to new distribution partners, the craft distilling industry has to get scrappier and double down on local and regional markets - a natural evolution mirroring what craft beer has gone through. In parallel, strategic partnerships are critical lifelines for those brands that aspire to long-term awareness with significant growth. For Conniption gin, Constellation Brands Ventures has been, and will continue to be, a voice of validation and enabler of growth that would otherwise be much harder or even, unattainable. I realize and acknowledge that our path has now diverged because of it. Make no mistake though, this market reset is already painful across the board, for decade-old distilleries and brand new ones alike. But hopefully this pruning is an opportunity to get refocused on what ignited our collective distilling passion in the first place. At Durham Distillery, that's meant going all-in on gin with a focused sales team and marketing partnerships with the goal of driving deeper penetration and velocity in our core markets. We're not trying to be a national brand right now because we know our dollars won't go far enough to penetrate or create that compound growth. For any craft distiller looking to emerge stronger, I advise the same approach. Reflect on your "why" - that distinctive essence that made you stand out in the first place. Then get laser-focused on nurturing that differentiator through targeted sales, marketing, and innovation efforts. The brands that survive this shakeout will be the ones who carved an unmistakable niche and relentlessly went after it. The game has changed, there's no denying that. But I remain energized about the future of craft distilling. This adversity is already sparking a renaissance of strategic discipline that will ultimately benefit both the industry and consumers who continue to seek authentic, passionately-crafted spirits. If we stay true to our roots while exercising a newly sharpened business mindset, craft distilling's best days still lie ahead. #gin #craftdistilling #distilling #spirits #americangin #adi #acsa
For Craft Spirit Distillers, a Dark Mood Is Simmering Craft distilleries have grown and flourished for the better part of two decades, anchoring neighborhoods and drawing supporters in all 50 states. Their spirits have enriched and diversified cocktail bars and liquor stores, and the industry as a whole has reset consumer expectations for flavor and authenticity. But craft distilleries are in trouble. Founders are throwing in the towel; inventory and equipment are being sold off; and bottles that were once on shelves are disappearing. The industry faces something of an existential crisis. Attendees of the February convention for the American Craft Spirits Association (ACSA) say that a dark mood is simmering. The next few years will provide ample retrospective analysis to identify the choices made that brought us here--everything from a lack of urgency/willingness to shift gears when the road conditions changed, to alc-bev industry infighting that repeatedly stalled DTC legislation--and those retrospectives will include also the pulled-through-the-reorganization examples we will learn from. The pandemic revealed the industry's potholes--and pointed toward solutions--by the end of 2020. That means some folks are in Year 3/4 of strategy adjustments. Others, who hoped to wait out a disruption rather than understand the evolution, are beginning Year One. But for all, there are still opportunities to not only survive, but set a new foundation from which to thrive. It'll always come back to three things: 1. Planning to strategy. 2. Protecting identity and reputation. 3. Build your community--within the distillery, and beyond.

It has been a little bit since I last visited with Marcia, and A LOT has been happening in the interim. To say that it has been a crazy, great, busy year for both her and the Ironroot Republic team would be a vast understatement. This dynamo of a human was just awarded the Icons of Whiskey Distillery Manager of the Year award by World of Whiskey. AND, building on a history of award-winning liquids, the Ironroot Republic team and brand have launched and been lauded for their recent creations as well. 2024 World of Whiskey - Ironroot Republic Hubris Straight Corn Whiskey - Gold 2024 World of Whiskey – Ironroot Republic Apotheosis Finished Bourbon – Bronze 2024 World of Whiskey – Ironroot Republic Harbinger Single Barrel Bourbon - Bronze 2023 USA Today 10 Best Craft Whiskey Distilleries - Readers’ Choice Award 2023 World of Whiskey - Icons of Whiskey Master Blender/Master Distiller – Jonathan Likarish - Highly Commended World of Whiskey 2023 - Ironroot Republic Apotheosis - World's Best Finished Bourbon World of Whiskey 2023 - Ironroot Republic Hubris - World's Best American Corn Whiskey Marcia attributes these accomplishments to a strongly held belief that "we do not achieve life's goals alone". She encourages team building with people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. She also advocates for the suspension of personal ego in the pursuit of knowledge. Her favorite quote explains her philosophy and it is hard to argue with her when her family’s operation demonstrates the results achieved with the application of it. “Opinion is really the lowest form of human knowledge. It requires no accountability, no understanding. The highest form of knowledge… is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another’s world. It requires profound purpose larger than the self kind of understanding.” ― Bill Bullard Her words of wisdom for us all? Do not underestimate yourself or your teammates. Much can be achieved with the suspension of ego and the drive to achieve.
