Welcome to May! Every year when the weather begins to warm up, I like to remind my teammates to log off at the end of each day and weekend and do what brings them joy. This month, I am so excited to highlight Charles Beard, who spreads joy and shows support, not just within Key and KTOS, but around his community. Charles truly embodies what we strive for at Key, to help our clients and communities thrive. Thank you, Charles, for the difference you make each and every day! #IamKey What is your position? Lead Manager, Head of the Consumer Bank Business Risk & Controls Team What do you love most about working at KeyBank? Two things: (1) I see cultural identity represented daily. (2) The culture of Key is electrifying as each teammate seeks to fulfill the corporate mission to help clients move forward on their financial journey. What personal or professional achievements are you proud of? I recently received a Ph.D. in Christian Education. What is a cause you are passionate about? I am passionate about feeding the homeless. I work with soup kitchens and the Under the Bridge Team for those living without permanent housing. What would you do if you won the lottery? I would fund scholarships for high school seniors in the U.S. to attend college, lowering the strain on the parents of up-and-coming bright minds. I would also increase the amount of funding we provide today to expand schools in Africa for primary and secondary education. What is the best advice you have ever received? “You get the opportunity to wake up each morning and make a difference, no matter how big or small, choose to make a difference.”

An hour meeting with Tony O. Elumelu, C.F.R or 10 million naira, this is an actual catch phrase for discus on live radio, which will definitely bring different reactions but I guess a vast majority will pick the 10million option which shouldn't be surprising because it a material world, but in actual sense you may not be able to crave what you have not experienced, but an experience will create the hunger for more. I had a rare privilege of meeting my chairman Tony Elumelu for the first time in a gathering not just for an hour but for two hours and the experience was hmmmmm! Words to little to describe, pondering about how I felt the only phrase that came to my mind was a "a total mental revolution "as used by Frederick Winslow Taylor. It was so insightful I got stuck with this learning points; 1. The fact that you are selected and first among equal should always make you humble and the objective correction of those you lead is what makes you a leader and not being subjective will always be a vital tool in retaining the quality of people around you and also helping them grow. 2. Be very discipline and resilient across all strata, it what makes us who we are in the long run towards success. 3. The need as young people to always plan for the future now and not spend it always on consumables is the key to financial freedom, taking advantages of various legal investment initiatives and an undiluted saving culture is key for us as young people in a world that preaches materialism on the altar of low disposable income. 4. The philosophy that encourages private commitments for African development through long term investment which is know as Africapitalism was shared. As a true Pan-African I have always had this philosophy that the problem of Africa is Africa and until we decide to take the bull by the horn and not cast aspersions on any parties for our shortcomings the necessary development may not come, we have to stand our ground and get our hands ready for battle with the right policies, ideas and philosophy in place if we must drive that inclusive growth and development across is an ideal the chairman also holds. let me not share it all 😉 Well if I was to make the choice again it will definitely be the chairman's time, thanks to the HR's at Heirs Holdings for the opportunity still haven't recovered, it an intoxication I pray never goes.
