Researchers at Fred Hutch have found that a specific subtype of a microbe commonly found in the mouth is able to travel to the gut and grow within colorectal cancer tumors. The findings could pave the way for new treatments and possibly new methods of screening, says Dr. Susan Bullman of Fred Hutch, who is the co-corresponding author of the study. As CNN reports, researchers are looking to blood-based biomarkers as an innovative early detection tool for pancreatic cancer. Dr. Brian Wolpin, director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, explains that the lack of screening tests means too many patients are being diagnosed in the later, more lethal stages of this disease. “The more patients we can find early, the greater the chance we have to cure patients of pancreatic cancer and start to reverse the statistics.” These sentiments are exactly why we are proudly investing in MD Anderson Cancer Center's study that is harnessing AI to integrate imaging and blood-based biomarkers. To spot breast cancer early, there are mammograms. To find colon cancer early, there are colonoscopies. But there is no standard test to detect early cases of pancreatic cancer.

➡️ In a new study, microbes normally found in the mouth were discovered in about one-half of examined colorectal tumors well as in stool samples of many people with colorectal cancer. ➡️ Researchers reported that the microbes traveled from the mouth to the colon, going through the stomach and remaining intact when exposed to stomach acid. ➡️ The scientists hope this discovery can lead to new treatment options for people with colorectal cancer. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month & Here are some important things to know: 70% of Colorectal Cancers are on the left side. Colorectal cancer is an umbrella term for colon cancer and rectal cancer. It’s common for left-side tumors to cause symptoms. It's common for people with left-side colorectal cancer to have changes in their bowel habits or blood in their stool. People with right-side tumors often show fewer symptoms. "We have learned that colon cancer can’t be viewed as one disease. We’re now looking at it as a complex disease with many subtypes and trying to develop targeted and personalized therapies that can be used depending on the specific type people have. Slowly and steadily, we are moving the bar for personalized therapy in colorectal cancer." #personalizedmedicine #cancerresearch #endcancer #colorectalcancerawareness
“We are moving the bar for personalized therapy in colorectal cancer. And I think the location of the cancer – left side versus right side – is a part of that,” says our Dr. Kanwal Raghav. Learn about the differences between left-side and right-side colon cancer and how tumor location impacts treatment decisions. #CancerResearch #EndCancer
