An Nisaa Yovani, Head of Research at Obviously Sustainable, recently served as a panelist at the AICHR-SEANF Regional Workshop on Sharing Good Practices and Effective Remedy for Migrant Workers in Business and Human Rights in ASEAN, held on the margins of the 2024 Responsible Business and Human Rights Forum, Asia-Pacific, in Bangkok, Thailand. In her insightful presentation, she emphasised the immense opportunities for businesses to contribute towards fulfilling human rights in the corporate sector, especially by initiating due diligence across their operations. Malaysia—both the government and businesses will need to step up very fast on labour reforms and protections for all workers. Otherwise, investors & financing bodies will have to be responsible & pay for remediation.
An Introduction to IOM Malaysia's Migration, Business, and Human Rights (MBHR) Programme in Asia. Discover IOM Malaysia action plans to address issues fostering fair recruitment and employment practices for vulnerable migrant workers. The Migration, Business and Human Rights (MBHR) Programme in Asia is a five-year regional programme and is funded by the European Union and Sweden. The programme will run from 2024-2028 across Cambodia, Malaysia, Nepal, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam.

Win Faidah, a former migrant worker from Indonesia, faced severe abuse while working abroad as a domestic worker. After her rescue and return, she became a beneficiary of the Safe and Fair programme. Now, Win supports women migrant workers by sharing her knowledge about rights, safe migration, and economic empowerment through the Former Migrant Worker’s Village Group. Her story highlights how important it is for governments to ratify ILO Convention No. 190. This convention is a key tool in the fight against violence and harassment in the world of work, offering support to workers worldwide. This week, in partnership with Work Better Innovations, IHRB cohosted the first Taiwan Business Forum for Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence - an opportunity to discuss the role of companies in safeguarding migrant workers in Taiwan supply chains. During the Forum, IHRB’s Guna Subramaniam and Neill Wilkins presented the Dhaka Principles for Migration with Dignity, available in more than 30 languages. It is a great pleasure to share my opinion and article on the Cambodia-EU relations. 2024 Strategic Year for Cambodia and EU Cambodia and the EU will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2024, and despite these challenges, Cambodia remains an important commercial partner for the EU, with the union remaining the second largest market for Cambodian textile sectors. To sustain robust and healthy ties, Cambodia and the EU must stick to the values of mutual trust and respect, and pursue a pragmatic yet strategic approach to maintaining steady flows of commerce and investment, technology and AI development and people-to-people exchanges.

We had close to 200 participants join us to explore key topics such as the UN Guiding Principles (#UNGPs), the OECD 6 step framework, and HRDD in the context of Thailand and migrant rights. A huge thank you to all our knowledgeable guest speakers, Pichamon Yeophantong, PhD,Asia-Pacific Member UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights and UNDP Thailand and everyone else who contributed to this training's success. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: • The UNGPs set out distinct but complementary roles for States and Business • HRDD processes need to be independent and iterative, to ensure long-term impact. • Meaningful stakeholder engagement is a key part of every step of the #HRDD journey 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲? 97% of suppliers reported learning something new!
