Pros and cons of a Tech Sales Career On its face, tech sales is an appealing career path: Done well, you make a lot of tech money fast. → That said, it isn’t a career for everyone. For one, tech sales are hard. This isn’t a cushy job, and it pays well because it’s difficult, both in time commitment and skill. The looming specter of quota means you may be pulling weeks well over 40 hours when it’s crunch time. But if you can handle the high pressure, you’ll find yourself in an industry built on camaraderie where you can earn more than some programmers could dream of. Here are some other pros and cons to consider Pros: Opportunities for remote work. Significant upward mobility. Exciting and dynamic field. High earning potential. We reject most of the applicants who come to us for a job in tech sales. Here are the 5 dumbest reasons I have heard from people on why they want a tech sales role: 1 - The laptop - Yes, really. 2 - Have time to keep up their side hustle. 3 - Get a cushy remote job. (It is not THAT easy). 4 - For the money (and no other reason). 5 - They think sales is easy. (Not for most people). The 10% of applicants we do accept know: 1 - The laptop is tracked and monitored lol. 2 - That getting good and crushing your quota takes time. 3 - A remote role has its own challenges. 4 - The money is only a tool, not the end result. 5 - Getting awesome at sales means wanting the best for your prospect.

Broaden your horizons after a failed sales hire. The last few AE's made $75k base? Post this job at $90-$100k. The last few VP's weren't experienced enough? Change the title to SVP and tweak the comp structure. Tired of pulling from a limited pool? Make the job remote. There's always fear when it comes to giving salespeople: - A higher base - The option to work remote - A better title But one minor tweak, can lead to MILLIONS in added revenue.
