Advancing climate justice means attending to the specific needs and interests of disproportionately affected groups and working alongside impacted communities to reverse these trends. Scholars across disciplines have a role to play in advancing climate justice — in educational, community, societal, and policy contexts. This World Café brings together scholars from the University of Cincinnati and the University of Johannesburg to discuss their perspectives, current work, and critical questions on the climate crisis. Panelists represent diverse, interdisciplinary backgrounds, including anthropology, psychology, poetry, education, political science, and science and technology studies. We hope you will join us for this critical discussion on one of the most pressing global challenges facing humanity today. 🌍📢 The largest ever public opinion survey on #climatechange reveals a global call for stronger climate action! The Peoples’ Climate Vote 2024, conducted by UNDP and the Department of Sociology, University of Oxford, shows that 80% of people worldwide demand stronger climate actions from their governments. This powerful message underscores the urgent need for policymakers to prioritize sustainability and climate resilience. The survey, involving over 73,000 people speaking 87 languages across 77 countries, included 15 questions related to climate change. It also includes responses from marginalized groups in the poorest parts of the world. Key findings include: 🤝 86% of people believe countries should work together on climate change, despite disagreements on other issues. 🌳 81% of people think countries should protect and restore nature. 🌡 78% of people believe countries should provide more protections to people at risk from extreme weather events. There’s compelling evidence that eco-depression demotivates people from pro-environmental behavior engagement, whereas anger motivates people to act. Climate stories that use empathy- or anger-inducing frames AND provide clear action opportunities are key to encouraging pro-environmental behaviors! To take it a step further, research has also found that behaviors often precede attitudes and beliefs. In other words, sometimes people need to DO a thing before they BELIEVE a thing. Effective storytelling that motivates people’s behaviors has the potential to change attitudes too! Never discount the power of a good story.

Can we change behavior to change the climate? An innovative paper in Nature explores insights from behavioral science and their applicability to climate action. Most prior research has focused solely on consumer behavior, but there are many other arenas in which behavioral choices are highly relevant.
