January 2024 Italian NPL collections of EUR 99m were 56% down month-on-month and 12% below the January average of the three previous years, continuing the declining trend observed throughout 2023. Based on 20 transactions where the breakdown of collections was specified, judicial proceeds amounted to EUR 64m and extrajudicial strategies EUR 18m, of which EUR 14m from DPOs and EUR 4m from note sales.. The last two months Hi Smart business results: > May 24/23 1️⃣ Revenues ⬆️ 197.3% 2️⃣ New business ⬆️ 248.5% 3️⃣ NPL index ↔️ 0.62% > June 24/23 1️⃣ Revenues ⬆️ 200.3% 2️⃣ New business ⬆️ 312.1% 3️⃣ NPL index ↔️ 0.6% Full satisfaction with the numbers but the best waiting ahead. July's estimations make me so happy with the CF business.

On October 8, 2024, Verona, the city of love, hosted the 10th edition of the NPL/UTP Meeting organized by ALMA IURA. I represented Coldwell Banker Commercial at the panel chaired by Corrado Angelelli deepening the judicial vs the out of court recovery. I wanted to dedicate my speech on what I think is one of the most important role inside the judicial recovery. That is the one played by the market advisor inside the insolvency and the pre-insolvency proceedings (so called soggetto specializzato). The market advisor is engaged by the insolvency managers to reposition the collateral in the market through a competitive auction process. It is the armored van in charge of monetizing the collateral. In this context is not explainable why the Ministry neglected so far the enactment of regulations setting forth the professional and eligbility criteria. Indeed, only a competent, recognized and well organized market advisor can ensure efficiency in the recovery process. I really enjoyed reading the recent Financier Worldwide Magazine Q&A (link below ⬇️) with Pinsent Masons on NPLs, looking particularly at the European, Indian, and Middle Eastern markets, and the ways in which financial institutions can and are addressing these loans. As an investigator, it was great to read their comments on the role of investigations in piercing the corporate veil, as well as the broader importance of information and intelligence in forming your NPL recovery strategy. This was neatly summed up by Jennifer Craven: “Knowledge is power when developing NPL litigation strategies. Effective information gathering at the outset concerning an NPL debtor’s assets and the debtor’s link to those assets is essential. It is this information that informs the enforcement strategy and helps identify potential low hanging fruit worthy of early attention in the search for quick wins. Without a strong backbone of robust and useful intelligence, NPL strategies can falter or become unnecessarily expensive.” Here here!
