Paranoid urbanism: a way of understanding debates, protests, tensions around new urban development themes in the post-pandemic city? In this article, Catalina Duarte, Simon Joss and I look at 15-minute cities, and their reception and depiction, as examples of a post-political urban condition characterised by mistrust, fear, and paranoia. We situate this within the shift (arguably triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic) in thinking and policymaking around automobilty and around questions about negotiations over the contested nature of public space in the city. A conversation that started around the 2023 Exeter Urban symposium and is now in print. The recording of our latest meeting on "Processes of #spatialjustice and politica #urbanism" with Ana Póvoas is now available on our website! Ana presented a collaborative project to envision a more just territory in the future, using a participatory approach. Two projects were discussed, one focusing on creating a network of actors and constructing a collective vocabulary of justice #values, and the other using a "flash method" to generate content quickly. The importance of understanding political urbanism and spatial justice through a comprehensive approach was emphasized, including the need to engage with all urban systems and acknowledge the political dimension of divisiveness about space. Challenges encountered during participatory research experiments were also discussed, such as dealing with unacceptable behaviors, convincing researchers to participate, and finding the best environment to host these processes. Always good to see the The Academy of Urbanism (AoU)'s quarterly journal published. This time reflecting on 25 years from the #Urban #Task #Force's seminal report 'Towards an Urban Renaissance'. And with a new 'New Towns' Task Force in play, it's super useful to hear from people involved at the time who consider their experience, the reports efficacy, and what if anything would change should our young leaders be asked a similar question.
