The practice of sport is recognised as a human right in the Olympic Charter, to be enjoyed by all without discrimination of any kind, and the United Nations Human Rights Council has acknowledged the potential for sport to cultivate human rights, combat discrimination and contribute to sustainable development. The Paralympic Games play an important role in promoting human rights in sport via increasing the representation, diversity and inclusion of athletes with disabilities. In this article, Partner and National Pro Bono Team Leader, Chris Owen and Associate, Summer Walker, explore the history and development of the Paralympic Games, the human rights framework which underpins it, as well as the challenging role of the International Paralympic Committee in balancing the right to inclusivity and participation with the need to protect athletes with disabilities from system exploitation.
