One of the most powerful lessons Brené Brown shares with her kids is about "candle blower-outers." She talks about how, when her kids were in third or fourth grade, they started facing the challenges of friendship—and that's when she taught them this crucial idea: “You have this flame—that’s your spirit, your soul, your light. Sometimes it’ll shine really bright. Surround yourself with people who look at that light and say, ‘Wow, what a beautiful light!’ You want to be the kind of friend who celebrates others' light, not the kind who blows it out." This lesson is something we can all take to heart, especially in leadership. How often do we, knowingly or unknowingly, dim the light of others? In work and life, it’s our job to fan the flame and help others shine. Let’s ask ourselves: Am I protecting the flame, or am I unintentionally blowing it out? How do you make space for others to shine? Let’s keep each other’s lights burning bright.
