🤔 Why do e-commerce and B2B Product Managers think differently? 🤔 I’ve interviewed several product managers recently and found that their commitment to their product can be a big factor. Interestingly, there’s a noticeable difference in commitment levels, especially between those who manage a directly sold B2B product and those who are responsible for an e-commerce shop, for example, where they sell products like shoes or clothes. 💻 Directly Sold B2B Products: Product Managers for directly sold B2B products often show higher commitment. They are directly responsible for the product’s success, which makes them more involved in Product Discovery. They work closely with their clients to understand customer needs, market trends, and potential improvements. This hands-on approach helps them continuously refine and develop their product. 🛍️ E-commerce Products: In contrast, Product Managers who handle shops where other products are sold might not show the same level of commitment. Often, Product Discovery is minimal or doesn’t happen at all. The focus is more on maintaining the shop and managing stakeholders. This can lead to less enthusiasm for product development and a disconnect from the end users. Other possible reasons for this difference: 🔗 Direct accountability: Product Managers of directly sold products feel a stronger sense of ownership and responsibility, driving their commitment. 👥 Customer closeness: Being closer to the end customers provides better insights and a stronger drive to meet their needs. 💰 Revenue impact: The success of directly sold products directly affects the company’s revenue, making Product Managers more invested. 🤝 Team dynamics: Teams working on directly sold products often have a more collaborative approach to Product Discovery. What do you think? Have you noticed similar differences in commitment levels? What could be other reasons for this variation? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments! #product #productmanagement #productdiscovery #experimentation #productmanager #productowner

Adam Rogers from Walmart is looking for a Principal Product Manager! There is simply too much friction reading a resume right now, so the best way for you to land interviews is by direct message on LinkedIn BUT LET ME BE CRYSTAL CLEAR. You still have to mass apply, because when companies ask you if you have applied yet in the portal and you say no then you have to start from scratch. It’s a lot of work I know and it sucks, but you got to do it. In 2025 mark my words at the rate AI is moving you will all by interviewing with holograms. I am not joking at all. There will be AI recruiting software that will sort, sift, screen (oh yes interview you), and schedule the second round interview. This is why I am telling everybody to land this job as soon as possible and to start a brand (more on that later), but for now you need to deliver a more impactful message to pitch your resume. Well… Rich what the heck am I supposed to say? That’s a fair question and I got you covered right here. I have a list of 33 openers you can use in Skool. I am actively seeking my next product leadership role, and I’m confident it lives with you: my friends and colleagues. I am thankful for the opportunity to have built the product team at Miovision, and I’m proud of the work we accomplished, including launching three new products and driving 35% YOY company growth. I wish the team that remains all the best! At this stage of my career, I’m doing my best work. I’ve worked as VP Product across five different industries (travel, influencer marketing, eCommerce, proptech, transportation) and varied investment situations (large public, PE, boot-strapped). I launched the first iPhone app for travel (TripCase), led the first influencer shopping app (LTK) to 1M users in 9 months and created global, B2B solutions for the largest companies in the world. Many companies admire the idea of empowered product teams. Some are able to implement the easiest parts; but unless they’re committed to building upon a solid foundation, most fail to see meaningful long term change. During my 20+ years in the industry, I have developed a simple, but powerful foundation of product management 101 principles. With quick results, I push teams into the 201 principles and evolve to 301, transforming the way a team builds and brings products to market. If you want faster, more innovative, and more successful products, you need a leader who inspires teams to actively join that journey. That is the work I love, and teams love taking that journey with me. As I look back over my work history, all of my favorite projects have one thing in common: the product aims to improve the quality of life for people. As I consider my next move, I’m most excited about opportunities in these areas: ▶ Music / Live Events (LiveNation, Spotify, SiriusXM, BandsinTown) ▶ Travel (Expedia, TripAdvisor, Hilton) ▶ Performance Management Solutions (15Five, CultureMap, Lattice, Workday) ▶ Interior Design / Remodeling / Smart Home (Google Home, Houzz, Angie's List, Zillow) If you have a friend or former colleague in any of these industries, I’d love a warm introduction or a comment on this message. Not only am I looking to network into these companies, but I also love to meet and learn from new people! I’m sure you won’t be surprised to know I’ve created a soundtrack for this job-seeking journey. As an advance “thank you” for your support, check out the comments for a link to my playlist “10 Songs to See You Through.” I hope it inspires and motivates you, too.
