Jewish values strongly support our active participation in voting and civic engagement.
"You shall appoint magistrates and officials for your tribes, in all the settlements that the Eternal your God is giving you, and they shall govern the people with due justice.” (Deut 16-18)
This Juneteenth take a minute to learn about the strength of wills of the American people to overcome adversity. Check out https://buff.ly/30O6CGn for ideas and information on this great achievement for civil rights!
In this episode, we welcome back Matthew D. Taylor, a senior Protestant scholar at Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies, to discuss the recent IVF ruling in Alabama and its ties to the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) and Christian nationalism. We explore the background of the NAR and its influence on American politics, particularly in relation to abortion. The ruling by the Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice, Tom Parker, is examined, highlighting his use of biblical and theological arguments in his concurring opinion.

Disagree with Misogyny
Morality and Misogyny has really been on display in the USA election campaigning. Within the father taling about morals appears to ignore some facts. Between Elon Musks , richest man in the world father of 12 children (between 3 partners) used his deception to enter the USA and incited racial hatred in the UK, and Trumps 5 kids (between 3 partners) has committed various alleged and proven immoral acts, including sexual offences and discrimination of his tenants and workers. As a result, I find the reverend fathers statement misleading and very concerning.
The church should be encouraging faith, but has a responsibility to deliver information around civil responsibilities and politics in a balanced fair manner. It is dangerous especially when such information is filtered with inaccuracies or is incomplete.
Denying people access to health care, restricting womens rights and civil liberties can be considered immoral. Trying to dictate what others should do to thier bodies after rape on nonviable pregancies may be considered immoral.
Trump profiled various men at his closing rally some with extreme views that made seriously offensive statements. This further marginalising women and even had Megyn Kelly pro reum supporter , (formerly from, ' Fox', pro Republican TV network) bamboozled.
In my personal opinion, there should be the encouragement of citizens to vote, and hold values inline with faith or what they want in society, but not how to vote. If religious leaders are to talk about morals, then they cannot just ignore immoral elements of the party manifestos or leaders they seek to endorse.
This Reverend fathers selective statements are not just misleading but tantamount to endorsing the immoral acts of the party he promotes. It also gives the leaders a pass. Remember for those who are bothered these acts include sexual assault, infidelity, discrimination and promoting tools that kill ie increased access to guns...etc etc .

Rev. Wylie Hughes and I discuss:
- The Black-Jewish Alliance - what happened to it and how to revive it?
- Public Discourse - can civil conversation return to civic life?
- The illiberal Left - can we revive liberalism among progressives?
The answers - only when we pull apart the Gordian knot of White Supremacy, American misogyny and patriarchy, and anti-Indigenous genocide, for a start.

VERITABLE ⛓️ SLAVERY
“Freedom”, Astericked
On Juneteenth, a day meant to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States, it is disheartening to realize that a form of involuntary servitude still exists within our prison system. While the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in 1865, it left a significant loophole: “except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.” This exception has perpetuated a modern form of slavery through prison labor, affecting approximately 780,000 inmates who are compelled to work under conditions that are often exploitative and unjust. This practice raises profound ethical and human rights concerns, shedding light on the ongoing struggles for true freedom and equality in America.
In the US in many states, prison labor is not entirely voluntary. Certain inmates are required to work as part of their sentences or as a condition of their incarceration. Refusing to work can lead to disciplinary actions, including loss of privileges, solitary confinement, or denial of parole.
Prison labor is often compensated at very low rates compared to the federal or state minimum wage. Inmates can earn as little as a few cents per hour, depending on the state and the type of work they are doing. The compensation is far below what a free worker would earn for the same job.
The types of work inmates are involved in can range from prison maintenance tasks (such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry) to manufacturing goods, farming, and even working for private companies. Some states have programs where inmates produce goods that are sold on the open market or provide services to government and private entities.
The practices around prison labor are governed by state and federal laws, as well as policies set by individual correctional institutions. These laws and policies can vary significantly, leading to different experiences and conditions for inmates in different parts of the country.
There has been ongoing advocacy and reform efforts aimed at improving conditions for prison labor, increasing wages, and ensuring that labor is genuinely voluntary. Some recent legislative efforts have aimed at amending the Thirteenth Amendment to remove the exception clause or to implement more humane labor practices within prisons.
It is estimated that approximately 65% of the prison population engages in some form of labor. This can include institutional support work, such as cooking and cleaning, as well as work for external companies through prison labor programs.
African Americans and Hispanics are disproportionately represented in the prison labor force, reflecting their overrepresentation in the general prison population. African Americans constitute about 33% of the prison population, while Hispanics make up about 23%.
Prison labor remains a significant and controversial aspect of the American criminal justice system, raising important questions about the ethics and economics of this practice.

This is dedicated to my great mentor Chaia Heller, who is able to coolly state truth amidst a world gone insane with virtue protesting, by protestors who would rather look good with a banner than think deeply about the hard strategy and hard work needed to achieve lasting justice and peace. This is part 4 of Heller’s article about the deep anti-Jewish racism in the writings of a so-called revolutionary thinker (Abdullah Ocalan). In times of crisis, know your history:
