Moritz Latour and I are happy to share our ideas regarding the work of boundary organizations - rather than working at the boundary of (only) policy & science, they should be seen as working with and for communities, as well, in their ultimate attempt to motivate research uptake. Our reconceptualization of boundary work is fueled by the insights we gained by talking with organizations operating in the Global South - up till now an acknowledged empirical blind-spot in much of the literature. Natural Capital is the current way we try to explain the complex connections between environmental and economic systems. A Natural Capital approach to decision-making aims to align decision-makers' models closer to reality, so policy decisions account for environmental impacts and consequences of change. By recognizing the value of natural resources and adopting a Natural Capital approach, we can promote sustainable development and make better, more informed choices that benefit both the economy and the environment. The book chapter by Annesha Chowdhury and Soubadra Devy highlights the importance of including a capabilities-oriented approach to achieving SDG 15, given its complex nature. The researchers argue for an inclusive approach that allows for diversity in representation, recognition of people as part of the conservation dialogue, and the recognition of people’s rights through a capabilities-oriented approach as a basic guiding principle. Using Martha Nussbaum and Breena Holland’s philosophical approach, they emphasize the need to not just protect political and environmental entitlements, through a constitutional guarantee, but expand to include an actual implementation roadmap that is inclusive and representative to successfully achieve SDGs. For over 65,000 years, the Traditional Custodians have nurtured a profound understanding of Australia’s land and waters. The National Environmental Science Program (NESP) recognises this invaluable knowledge, combining it with scientific research to care for our environment. At NESP’s core are Indigenous Partnerships, guided by principles of genuine collaboration. To further support these efforts, NESP has developed a Three Category Approach Research Workbook: Communicate, Co-Design and Indigenous-Led that provides practical advice on how to integrate these principles into research.
