In #NorthumberlandCounty, community growth and development have been explosive, presenting both opportunities and challenges for the local police services. Today we published an Inspection Report looking at Community Safety and Local Policing Arrangements in NI. Law enforcement agencies are striving to improve relationships with community members and enhance the overall trust and respect for police, which supports their ability to address crime.  "Community-Oriented Policing" is a phrase frequently used but often misunderstood by community members, politicians, the media and, in some cases, law enforcement leadership. Prevention-focused community policing is a modern organizational philosophy with the primary goal of working cooperatively with citizens to identify and resolve issues that can affect the quality of life in their neighborhoods through a prevention-based approach.

It wouldn't be a stretch to say that virtually every report calling for police reform today cites the need to implement community policing. But what does that mean? It's more than simply involving the broader public in discussions about policing tactics. Much more. It’s about a fundamental shift in the way we view policing. 🚔 Reno Police Department's Community-Oriented Policing Program (COPS+) 🚔 In response to financial constraints and a growing population, the Reno Police Department developed the Community Oriented Policing-Plus (COP+) program. This initiative aimed to rebuild community trust and enhance police support through comprehensive reorganization and a new management style. Key components included mandatory 40-hour COP+ training for all employees and the establishment of Neighborhood Advisory Groups to foster police-community dialogue. Our committee's efforts have been acknowledged by the White House and the Department of Justice. The White House recently issued an executive order on May 25, 2022, emphasizing the importance of advancing effective, accountable policing and criminal justice practices to enhance public trust and safety. I recently came across a fascinating article by one of the leading experts on public order policing. This topic remains highly relevant, especially as agencies that might not have been concerned with managing public order events a decade ago - certainly are today. Interestingly, these events often reflect a microcosm of our communities. The factors that determine the success or failure of liaison models in public order events are similar to those that affect community policing. In both contexts, the legitimacy of the police and their alignment with the goals and motivations of the demonstrating group or community are crucial for success. https://lnkd.in/ee48Gw6E
