Albemarle Foundation Donates 50 Science Kits to Central Elementary School The Albemarle Foundation recently donated 50 hands-on science kits to Central Elementary School, providing an exciting new resource for students to explore the wonders of science. Kimberly Jones (left) and Kodi Bane (right) presented the kits to Rachel Allhands, the school’s Math/Science Facilitator, alongside four enthusiastic fifth-grade students. Also present for the occasion was Sonya Russell, the district's Math/Science Coordinator. The hands-on kits, designed to engage young learners in practical science activities, will be a valuable tool for fostering curiosity and scientific inquiry among Central Elementary’s students. The donation reflects the Albemarle Foundation’s commitment to supporting education and enriching learning experiences for students in the community.

U. of San Diego Lands $75 Million for STEM Programs The donation from San Diego philanthropist Darlene Shiley will pay for a new building and expand science, technology, engineering, and math programs at the private Catholic university.

This holiday season, the SLF team is collaborating with emerging authors to donate a new collection of published books to Shriners Children's Chicago and Rush Children's Hospital. This initiative will focus on enhancing STEM education for children.

Starting today (Monday, Nov 11th), Rollins College has begun the first ever Student Philanthropy Week. (https://lnkd.in/e5Pdjhfz) This event allows anyone and everyone to donate directly to student organizations, such as our American Chemical Society chapter (The Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society). As President of the Rollins College ACS Chapter, I want to politely ask my connections to consider giving toward our campaign. As scientists, this of course means we get to be creative in finding low-cost ways to fund our events such as ChemisTEA (where we share a demo on how pH effects teas), Chemistry in Color ( Winter Park Library, aimed toward teaching tweens about the Radium Girls and fluorescence), STEM: Hands on Exploration (at the Winter Park library, aimed toward all age groups to showcase different careers in STEM), at the NOBCChE STEM Fest, and at the Orlando Science Center (for National Chemistry week). However, having a designated amount of funds toward our efforts would be an immense help in our journey to build a strong STEM community, both on campus and in public outreach. For our ACS chapter report for the 2023-2024 academic year, the most common request we received was to find a way to obtain funding. This year, Student Philanthropy Week is our opportunity to do so. So I humbly ask those in my network to please consider giving toward our chapter. Woodside is excited to announce a $60,000 donation to Louisiana’s Region V STEM Center which provides STEM educational opportunities to students and teachers throughout Southwest Louisiana. The donation, in partnership with the Calcasieu Parish School Board and City of Lake Charles who donated $20,000 each, will bring a new state of the art STEM Innovation Lab to the Center. The Innovation Lab will focus on specific areas including space and travel, robotics and drone exploration, and innovations and inventing. It's Spring. It's Monday. It's Solar Eclipse day. Most importantly though - It is the day WITS kicks off our campaign to give books to students and teachers. This year I am joined by mentors, colleagues and volunteers on TEAM LEARN ACADEMY. Our Team this year has a goal of raising $14,000 to ensure that the students of LEARN have their very own books for the summer and every day that comes after.  You can help us reach our goal by donating to my page here. https://lnkd.in/ep_sJwDP I have been doing this for nearly a decade now. Everyday I think about reading. I know that likely most of you don't. Yes, you read, everyday, probably a lot of the moments of your day involve reading - but you probably don't really think about it. Yet, 56% of adults in America are functionally illiterate, not able to comprehend text above a 6th grade level. For comparison, most American newspapers are written at an 11th grade level. WITS programs are uniquely designed as a preventative measure to that statistic. We work with youth at the critical early elementary ages to ensure strong habits and positive relationships to reading and learning that provide the foundation for all future learning. The WITS Summer Books campaign raises funds that directly support the purchase and distribution of over 22,000 books to teachers and students. The data and research are clear – children who have access to print reading materials have better literacy outcomes. Join me!
