Stretch, Bend and Twist, is not just your morning exercise, but what a soft robotic manipulator is capable of doing. Continuum Robots, unlike robots with rigid links, can bend anywhere along their lengths. Some continuum robots, have a flexible backbone with tendons – taut strings routed along its length - and, are controlled by pulling the tendons. Given their flexibility, modelling them for control becomes hard. The authors model the robot by approximating the highly complex non-linear equations of motion that can enable robust control development. This is a development over previous models that don’t account for the coupled complexities of continuum robots.
