October is #BreastCancerAwareness Month, and it’s a good reminder for women to schedule their mammogram. Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, accounting for one in three diagnoses among women, the majority of which have no family history. Preventive screenings are essential because early detection and treatment significantly increases survival rates. For the past two years, Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan’s Mobile Mammogram Clinics have brought lifesaving breast-cancer screenings directly to members in neighborhoods across Los Angeles and San Diego counties. Since 2022, we've hosted 72 mobile mammogram clinics and screened almost 1300 members who want to take charge of their health. We host these clinics at familiar locations such as our Community Resource Centers, shopping centers, and neighborhood health clinics. Screenings are fully covered at no cost to our members. Through Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan’s mobile mammogram program, we are removing barriers to care and boosting the health of the communities we serve. That’s a wonderful result for a screening that typically takes just 20 minutes and can make a major difference to a woman’s health. 📢 Did you know? 63% of women are unaware of the increased breast cancer risk associated with dense breasts. A recent national study highlights this gap and the urgent need for greater awareness and education. With the new federal mandate on breast density notifications coming this September ( the mandate requires healthcare providers to notify patients if they have dense breast tissue and explain its associated risks), we hope this gap will decrease, empowering more women to take proactive steps in their breast health. Understanding breast density and its implications can lead to earlier detection and better outcomes.
