Good old days: Authors delayed publication to better the competing paper. Today: -Author: The first version of our paper was posted on the SSRN on XXX, 6 days before YYY. -Author: A recent paper by XXX also implements YYY. We show their method is problematic in several aspects (and of course only our paper deserves a publication in ZZZ). -Reviewer: Though the paper under review studies XXX more comprehensively than YYY (and the empirical tests have no overlap in any shape or form), the current paper’s contribution is clearly insufficient for a top journal such as ZZZ. -Author: Ideal stolen, trust broken. -Editor: The XXX literature has grown astronomically and unfortunately, this paper falls short of... (even though I accepted another 20 papers on XXX). Therefore, I decide to reject your submission.

This is totally a legit research paper folks. What I find particularly compelling is that not only do the authors cite Harry Frankfurt's work on 'bull$hit'* correctly (On Bull$hit, Princeton, 2005), but also the following from the introduction to the paper: "Because these programs cannot themselves be concerned with truth, and because they are designed to produce text that looks truth-apt, without any actual concern for truth, it seems appropriate to call their output bull$hit." Def. worth a read. *note: the exchange of the $ for 's' is mine in the text. I do this so that my texts can't be scraped

One thing we have been doing in our most recent papers is including a table in the Introduction, summarizing the main features of previous related papers and how the new paper compares with them. In my view, this can help the reviewers/readers a lot in understanding the novelty and research contribution of the manuscript with respect to the existing literature. What do you think? References of the papers corresponding to the tables in the attached figure, from top to bottom and left to right: https://lnkd.in/d5s8usih https://lnkd.in/dSarJ4Xs https://lnkd.in/dywiP7B6 https://lnkd.in/dVNr5q8e https://lnkd.in/dSw82ee8 https://lnkd.in/dsbrsApz
