Building trust in AI solutions is challenging -- especially in healthcare, where complexity and competing priorities pose additional change management roadblocks. Join me, Kandice Garcia Tomkins, and Melinda Johnson as we dive into building trust in radiology AI solutions and realizing quality improvement goals. This is the second in our three-part series that examines AI-empowered radiology follow-up quality improvement initiatives through the lens of East Alabama Health.

What happens when you fine-tune GPT-4o to generate radiology reports from chest X-rays? We found that fine-tuning GPT-4o on the MIMIC-CXR dataset sets a new SOTA in lexical metrics but not in clinical accuracy metrics. We present these fine-tuning results for both GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini in our recent MedImageInsight paper (Table 5). When we paired MedImageInsight with a text decoder, we achieved near SOTA level performance on report findings generation with less than 10% of the parameters of other models.

Our paper introduces X-RGen, a framework designed for generating radiology reports across six anatomical regions, addressing the limitations of current data-driven methods that focus primarily on the chest. X-RGen emulates a radiologist's workflow in four stages: initial observation, cross-region analysis, medical interpretation, and report formation. It combines advanced image encoding with clinical knowledge integration and auto-regressive text decoding, demonstrating improved effectiveness and clinical accuracy on six X-ray datasets.
