I help people live their best work lives

I met a former colleague for lunch the other day. Over tuna poke bowls, we talked about how much had changed since we used to work together. He's now an executive in a large company. He told me that leading people is more difficult these days. "Why do you say that?" I asked. "Things are different," he said. "Employees ask more questions. There is more pressure to answer those questions and be totally authentic about it. They have more access to information and they're sharing it with each other. They know more of what's going on in the business, as well as how things are run at other companies." "In other words, they hold leadership more accountable," I supposed. "100%," he agreed. "We're held way more to account compared to C-suite leaders when you and I were working together 15 or so years ago." "But," I countered, "isn't that a good thing?" "Absolutely!" he exclaimed, "It's amazing. People are way more engaged in how the business runs. Gone are the days that leaders are blindly followed just because they have a 'C' in their title. My work is way harder, but I think it's great. Team members are letting me know what they need from me. There's less guessing." "So there's less missing the mark too that way?" I offered. "Not exactly," he said. "Just because I know what they want from me, doesn't mean I can always deliver it. But I can try." What do you think? Do you think the leadership at your company has the same sense of accountability? Are they approachable and transparent? When it comes to doing your job well, do you feel that you're getting what you need from your leaders? #WorkCulture #CorporateCulture #Leadership

This is a great dialogue you’ve shared with us with great insights. It’s good that leadership is being held accountable to their teams, that there is a demand for authenticity and transparency. It’s harder for leadership but employees need to be prepared for the uncertainty that their leaders need to manage through. If you want full transparency then you need to be a part of the solutions that need to be found not part of the problem that a lack of certainty can sometimes create.
