Since the legalisation of medical flower in the UK in 2018, NHS prescriptions remain scarce, while private clinics prescribe CBPMs more broadly for conditions unresponsive to standard treatments. Limited NHS access is largely due to strict guidelines, perceived lack of evidence, and barriers in clinician training. A report published by Drug Science in September 2024 reveals that 55% of healthcare professionals have not received training on medical flower, leading to low confidence and knowledge in prescribing CBPMs. Although over 40,000 specialists are authorised to prescribe CBPMs, fewer than 100 actively do so according to the report. Financial costs and regulatory constraints further hinder NHS prescriptions, driving many patients to seek private treatment. There is a clear need for expanded training and integration of real-world evidence to build healthcare professionals' confidence, address efficacy and dependency concerns, and reduce stigma, ultimately aiming to improve access to safe, evidence-based treatment options for patients. Kudos to APhA CEO, Michael Hogue, PharmD, for his pithy blog on the need to accelerate payment for pharmacists' clinical services. Many states now have coverage for specific pharmacist services or broadly cover any service within the pharmacists' scope of practice. Setting up payment processes (i.e., provider enrollment, credentialing, billing) may seem complex yet he offers a few steps that pharmacists can take to accelerate the process. https://lnkd.in/ea6tMUU6
