As Andrew so succinctly and concisely puts it, "who wouldn't want to sign up for a class where you get to explore and discuss cutting edge advances in science and tech and how to ensure they end up as tech for good rather than the alternative?" 🙂
Q: How do you let undergrads know about one of the coolest and most unique courses on emerging tech, responsible innovation and the future around? A: Naively assume that they hang out on LinkedIn and ask everyone you know to promote the course trailer like crazy! I suspect I'm probably being overly optimistic, but then who wouldn't want to sign up for a class where you get to explore and discuss cutting edge advances in science and tech and how to ensure they end up as tech for good rather than the alternative? Yesterday after a long weekend visit to California left Stanford University (USA)…st Francisco on 24/6/24…My childhood dream university…. Stepping into the grounds of Stanford University, one encounters an institution that stands as a beacon of innovation, academic rigor, and burgeoning opportunities. Stanford is a phenomenal university that has surpassed Harvard as the most desired school in the country. With the advent of the digital age and the technological revolution, students can only dream to one day build the next billion dollar startup that will disrupt industries for the next decade to come. To attend this prestigious can be a transformative experience for many ..it's entrepreneurial DNA at the core of its culture… My experience with Stanford was more than that of attending a world-class academic institution...It also was a place where the default assumption was to be idealistic and willing to take risk. Rather than use intellectual horsepower to explain why something would not work, There was a complementary culture that celebrated the importance of intelligent risk...it was a culture that changed the life of best students of world … If I had to sum up my Stanford visit today in one word, it would be "humbling". Almost everyone there is remarkably intelligent; there is a bigger concentration of smarts on that campus than anywhere else I've been. A common thread to Stanford's culture that I would sum up as follows: Never judge the quality of an idea by its current audience; instead, estimate an idea's value by carefully measuring its lasting impact. Stanford's location lifts you up in two distinct ways: You can't help but feel inspired by the accomplishments of alums in the technology sector; and the Bay Area's amazing weather makes that possible … Stanford is incredible. The professors there are top notch; of the world …

EDUCAUSE was a BLAST last week! Outside of seeing the "real" DeLorean, Mark Roman's Higher Ed trends talk was a highlight. Here are my three main takeaways: 1) In 2025, the number of 18 year-olds will peak and then universities will have to contend with rapidly declining enrollment. Lost revenue will hurt especially if local legislation prohibits raising tuition. 2) We're going to see more and more universities declaring bankruptcy and going through mergers and acquisitions. This will fuel a competitive fire between institutions who have historically collaborated. 3) With advances in quantum computing, sensitive student data (and all data) will be easily decrypted. Some of this data is already being hoarded by malicious groups knowing they will have the ability to decrypt in five or so years. Ping me if you'd like a copy of his slides! #technology #cio #digital #informationsecurity #artificialintelligence

We’re proud to share an insightful article co-authored by our Dean, Dr. Marika Seigel, titled "Tomorrow’s Needs, Today’s Education." In this piece, Dr. Seigel and co-author Robert Hutchinson explore how Michigan Tech is reimagining education to meet the evolving needs of society and industry. From innovative learning experiences to interdisciplinary collaboration, the article highlights the importance of preparing students not just for today’s challenges but for tomorrow’s opportunities. At the Pavlis Honors College, we’re proud to support this vision by offering programs that empower students to lead, innovate, and make a difference. Together, we’re building the future.
Over the past decade, we've learned that adaptation and innovation lead to opportunity. Looking ahead to 2035, Marika Seigel and Robert Hutchinson pose three big questions about the future of education—and envision how Michigan Tech can reimagine teaching, learning and leading in an ever-shifting world.
