With Argo committed to history, VW has tapped Mobileye to make autonomous ID.Buzz shuttles a reality. For an OEM, that is a tried move: You don't have to reinvent every wheel that you can also buy from a specialized supplier - though I wonder if this new constellation will benefit from as much vertical integration as I assume the Argo team would have been allowed. Looking at the sensor rig that's going to feed the AD stack, there's no shortage of inputs: Perception will get signals from 13 cameras, 9 LIDARs and 5 radars. Given how different that is from a regular production vehicle, and that AD solutions don't really scale from one setup to another, it will be interesting to see if and how VW achieves the goal of also fueling next-gen ADAS with this effort: "The automaker says that the modules used by the electric minivan will also be used for Level 2+ autonomous systems and above in other models, helping to scale up the technology and drive costs down."

🚗 Understanding the Levels of Autonomous Driving (SAE)🧑💻 With advancements in automotive technology, discussions around autonomous driving are more relevant than ever. But did you know there are distinct levels of autonomy defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International )? Let’s break down each level to understand the future of driving. 🛣️ The 6 Levels of Driving Automation: Level 0: No Automation The driver performs all tasks. The vehicle may have basic features like warnings but no control over steering, acceleration, or braking. Level 1: Driver Assistance At this level, the vehicle can assist with either steering or acceleration/braking, but the driver remains in control. Common examples include lane-keeping assist or adaptive cruise control. Level 2: Partial Automation The vehicle can control both steering and acceleration/braking simultaneously in certain conditions. However, the driver must stay engaged and monitor the environment at all times. Think of systems like Tesla Autopilot or GM Super Cruise. Level 3: Conditional Automation Here, the vehicle can handle all driving tasks under specific conditions, but the driver must be ready to take control when prompted. Examples include limited self-driving on highways with clear weather and traffic conditions. Level 4: High Automation The vehicle can handle all aspects of driving in certain environments or conditions, such as urban areas or dedicated lanes, without driver intervention. However, if it exits these conditions, human control may be needed. Level 5: Full Automation At this level, the vehicle is fully autonomous and capable of driving in all conditions and environments, with no human intervention required. Steering wheels and pedals are optional! Why Understanding These Levels Matters 🤔? As automotive engineers, designers, and enthusiasts, it’s essential to understand where the industry stands and where it’s heading. Today, most systems on the road are at Level 2 or Level 3, but with rapid technological advancements, we’re gradually moving toward Level 4 and beyond. The Future of Autonomous Vehicles is exciting, but it’s equally crucial to ensure the technology develops with safety, reliability, and public trust at its core. #AutonomousDriving #SAE #AutomotiveTechnology #SelfDrivingCars #VehicleSafety #FutureOfDriving #AutomotiveEngineering
