This week, our experts Sarah Jackson, Lukas Kahlen, and Inès Paiva hosted a webinar featuring insights from Marc Vanheukelen (former EU Climate Ambassador), Linda Kalcher (Executive Director at Strategic Perspectives), and Cecilia Trasi (Research Analyst at Bruegel - Improving economic policy). They shared their perspectives on how the EU can strengthen its approach to international partnerships, particularly in the context of the newly announced Clean Trade and Investment Partnerships (CTIPs). Our expert panel brought diverse perspectives on the challenges and opportunities ahead. Here are some key takeaways: 🔹 Breaking down silos: A recurring theme was the need for better coordination between the EU’s DGs, the EEAS, and Member States. CTIPs were highlighted as an opportunity to unify and streamline existing partnership frameworks and improve coherence. 🔹 Ensuring Buy-In and Flexibility: The discussion emphasised the importance of securing strong buy-in from partner countries, Member States, and development banks. Flexibility was identified as essential, allowing partnerships to adapt to crises such as economic shocks or extreme weather events while remaining aligned with local priorities. 🔹 Opportunities for the Clean Trade and Investment Partnerships: Success will require clear political oversight, strong partner engagement, and mechanisms to address challenges quickly and effectively. 🔹 The EU’s Global Leadership Role: The panellists explored how the EU can position itself as a leader in global climate action. Delivering on its climate commitments and fostering meaningful engagement with key global partners were identified as critical for filling the potential leadership gap left by shifting international dynamics. This webinar underscored the importance of effective coordination, inclusive decision-making, and tangible outcomes in building partnerships that truly deliver on shared climate goals. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this thought-provoking discussion! 🔗We have also recorded the webinar, which you can watch here: https://lnkd.in/gAfKp5V6. 🔗Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/g-d_5_Cn 📢 What do you think are the most critical steps for the EU to strengthen its global partnerships? Lucy Naydenova , Pacifica F. Achieng Ogola, PhD Caroline Mugwe Caroline Ouko All followers Thank you Ms Lucy Naydenova for this information to my climate friends: The Adaptation Benefits Mechanism on which the African Development Bank, some African countries and a range of stakeholders have been working so hard is now officially added to the toolbox for the implementation of the Paris Agreement. It is the first recorded non-market approach and the first recorded cooperative approach for adaptation. For those who still struggle to understand what a non-market approach is after more than a decade of the introduction of this term - it is a label for all structured ways of internal cooperation on climate action that are not carbon markets. I would like to thank all enthusiasts and pioneers who have been contributing tirelessly and congratulate them with passing this important milestone. In my view, rewarding climate-proof actions at the expense of climate polluters is an effective way for internalising the climate costs and accelerating a transition to a more responsible global economic model (not based on suicidal principles as it is now). The ABM is rewarding adaptation action in a non-profit way. It delivers results-based packages of quantified and verified information (MRV) for transparency under the Paris Agreement and other reporting. To really make it work, governments, especially those of developed countries, must show that they are serious about achieving the global goals for adaptation and climate finance (half of which for adaptation) and delegate part of the responsibility for adaptation action to the private sector, specifically those most responsible for it - just as it was done for mitigation in the European Union 20 years ago. This will not only help to internalise the costs for tackling climate hazards but also unlock a tremendously exciting new arena for international cooperation, technology development and transfer, which are usually win-win for all involved.

Today at #StateOfEU, we’re diving into the progress of the EU's Green Deal amid voices calling for stronger, faster action on climate, featuring: 🔹 Frank Elderson, Executive Board Member and Vice Chair of the Supervisory Board of the European Central Bank 🔹 Diana Urge-Vorsatz, Vice-Chair at the Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Professor at the Central European University (CEU) Hosting the ideas sharing session, focused on fighting in courtrooms for climate protection as a human right: 🔹 Isabelle Jorg, Board Member of Klima Seniorinnen, the Swiss Senior Women for Climate Protection 🔹 Rosmarie Wydler-Wälti, Co-President of Klima Seniorinnen, the Swiss Senior Women for Climate Protection Our #2024Voices study reveals that for many, climate is the most urgent issue, with citizens lamenting decades of missed opportunities and demanding bold reforms to “make up for lost time.”. Citizens across Europe shared their frustration with political inaction and greenwashing, calling out the need for policymakers to get tougher on big polluters and prioritise climate over profit. Many see the EU as the only body capable of enforcing meaningful change, with widespread support for taxes on high-emission industries and an end to fossil fuel subsidies. ❗ The call is clear: a just transition, higher standards, and a vision for a truly sustainable economy. As we discuss Europe’s climate future, we ask: what urgent steps must the EU take to ensure a climate-safe future for all? 🌐 #RenewedSocialContract #Voices4Choices

New publication: “European Climate Policy After the Elections: Implementation Challenges and the Next Phase” With the confirmation of Ursula von der Leyen second term in office, the hard work of implementing decisions already taken and developing the next phase of EU climate policy begins. In this new sef: Development and Peace Foundation / Stiftung Entwicklung und Frieden Global Governance Spotlight I summarize the main developments of the past five years and highlight three key political challenges for the next Commission: 1️⃣ Narrower majorities in the European Parliament and Council in favour of ambitious climate protection. 2️⃣ The crisis in European industry and the economy as a whole, creating new pressure to legitimise ambitious climate policy. 3️⃣ Many unanswered questions about so-called 'hard-to-abate' emissions, which have received little attention in climate policy to date. With #competitiveness being the main theme of von der Leyen's second Commission, the following three recommendations would help to implement decisions already taken and decide on how to shape the next phase of EU climate policy from 2031-2040. ◾ Align industrial policy initiatives with climate goals and seize the opportunity to gradually expand the EU’s options for action in this field ◾Emphasize the external dimension of the Green Deal, especially if the implementation of new measures to promote European competitiveness triggers new international tensions. ◾Building political resilience: The EU's climate policy architecture has proven to be crisis resilient. Future EU climate policy should not only aim for high levels of ambition, it should also aim to build political resilience into the instruments.

I was at an event in Brussels today which brought together MEPs, DG Clima representatives, and private sector voices to discuss the EU’s leadership in addressing climate change. Key takeaways: ✅ EU Leadership: The EU has a robust regulatory toolbox under the Green Deal and a coordinated approach across member states. The EU is not only solving challenges for Europe but proving the business case for sustainability on a global stage. ✅ Diverse approach: The EU is unique in having a set of regulations which set the direction and a diverse membership which enables contextual approaches for varying geographies, economic conditions, national policy choices and risk appetites—creating a broad platform for validation. ✅ Private Sector’s Role: Businesses made it clear they are taking action and are ready to do more but need regulatory certainty. Uncertainty, such as we are seeing around the EUDR, the omnibus regulation, and the lack of a level playing field in carbon markets, inhibits investment and progress. ✅ Financing Climate Goals: The point was also made that the revenues from the ETS and future CBAM must be reinvested to accelerate sustainable markets. The global conditions present new challenges to keep up the momentum. We will see the green deal adapted towards a more industrial strategy, but from what I heard today I think the momentum will be maintained. A big thank you to POLITICO Europe for organising this event and to all participants for their invaluable contributions. Events like these strengthen collaboration and momentum toward a sustainable future. #Sustainability #GreenDeal #ESG #ClimateLeadership
