So I had a thought… Every year around this year, veterans will post pics of themselves from their time in the military to look back fondly, and reflect about that time in our lives. I fully support this, but I want to take a slightly different approach. Rather than just focusing on my time in… I also want to reflect upon my time as an actual veteran. Obviously, the first picture was from my time in the Army. I had just got back from Iraq, adjusting to being single again, and just embracing my identity as a Soldier. The second picture is within a year or so after I got out. I was heavily involved in the veteran motorcycle club scene. While the structure of this is very militaristic, we also had a mission of veterans helping veterans. This was a key aspect that would stay with me. While I loved riding, and loved my Brothers… I wasn’t entirely comfortable that the lifestyle was a good fit for me. The third picture was from my time as a leader in the veteran community. I carried over the mantra of veterans helping veterans from my time in the motorcycle community. This chapter was probably just as defining as the military chapter. The fourth picture is of me, this year, after having left the previous chapters behind me. Now I am focused on family, career and health. While I still care very deeply about veteran issues, I have largely left my advocacy work behind me. I do what I can, when I can, within my limits, it is not remotely on the scale that it once was. Sometimes I’m at peace with that, other times, I’m not. I can’t necessarily control my physical health and energy levels. Peace comes from focusing on that which I can. I can be present in my family’s lives. I can focus on excelling in my career. I can focus on the things that bring me joy.
