Today, I had the pleasure of meeting Ninna Katrine Larsen, an inspiring circular economy leader and founder from Australia. Ninna is currently touring Europe to explore the #circular economy, and she asked me about Finland and MiXi. I proudly shared Finland’s impressive progress, emphasizing how, thanks to Sitra and the Finnish government, Finland was the first country to create a national roadmap for a circular economy. I pointed out that Finland is one of the countries where I don't need to explain what "kiertotalous" means when people ask about my work. I also believe that for Finnish brands, being circular and sustainable feels natural, closely aligned with the core values of crafting long-lasting products from durable materials. However, at some point, I felt it was important to express a concern. I told Ninna that there was momentum when Finland could have been THE go-to destination for cities, companies, and investors seeking circular innovations. However, other European countries have taken the lead, driven by bold decisions, investments, and robust public-private partnerships. For instance, countries like France are challenging the traditional linear economy with initiatives such as fast fashion taxation and repair vouchers, which encourage more sustainable consumer choices. Ninna also shared her experience visiting physical circular hubs in the Netherlands. I had to admit that sadly, we don’t have a circular hub in Helsinki. Is it too late for #Finland to reclaim its leadership in circularity? What do you think? #ciruclareconomy #Finland #helsinki #circularity
