A statement from President & CEO Carlo Scissura: “Ingrid Lewis-Martin was a linchpin of the Adams administration and helped guide the city through a turbulent pandemic recovery period to a better place. She’s a one-of-a-kind New Yorker whose contributions have been immeasurable. She’ll be missed at City Hall, and I’m proud to call her my friend.” https://t.co/lh1mgEPe3z

Another great article posted by the Director of Second Look Network at The Sentencing Project regarding use of clemency powers to address excessive sentences. The number of older people in State & Federal prisons is increasing faster than any other age group. How could anyone claim that the point of incarceration was to incapacitate the truly dangerous when there are more people older than 55 in US prisons (165,000) than there are people in the high-crime range of 18-24? Geriatric healthcare in prison is both disgraceful and expensive. It costs on average, 3x more to incarcerate an older person than a younger one. Governor Andy Beshear could help alleviate the excessive costs mass incarceration has incurred on Kentucky as a proponent for second chances, and providing additional resources to protect public education and access to affordable healthcare-basic rights to the citizens of the Commonwealth. #SecondLookLaws #FreeKarenBrown
What an incredibly bold and inclusive way for a Governor to use clemency powers to address excessive sentences. Read New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy's clemency initiative at: https://lnkd.in/eXHPEwdj Governor Murphy's statement: “Today on Juneteenth, a day that celebrates freedom, I am incredibly proud to launch a historic clemency initiative. I’m committed to using my powers as Governor to pardon and commute sentences to address injustices and overly harsh sentences in our criminal justice system. Thank you @ltgovway, @pastor_rls, @meekmill, and @wallo267 of @reform, Amol Sinha of the @aclunj, Justin Dews, and everyone who joined us in Newark today in support of second chances and the values of justice, compassion, and rehabilitation."

Mayor Lucas how many Black contractors on Meta/Turner project 5% How many Caucasians 95% Kcmo urban core 40% Black? Also no minorities allowed on Meta/Turner, Ordinance created by Mayor Lucas and City Council? Ask about that? Nope because it involves Blacks? ORDINANCE NO. 230401 Amending Chapter 3, Code of Ordinances, by repealing Section 3-431, “Setting Goals for Individual Contracts” and enacting in lieu thereof a new section of like number and subject matter regulating the application of numeric MBE/WBE goals on certain projects leased for development.
Just 3 men who have many differences but one major passion - serving the public! Do you know that 31 people have held the seat of Mayor for Kansas City and the first Mayor was elected in 1859? Only three of those Mayors have been black, While we may differ in political views and opinions, we do know that each of our terms brought growth and expansion, making Kansas City the city it is today! #kansascity

Interesting event. It is commendable that reform is prioritized alongside the restoration of public trust and the transformation of policing culture. Strong leadership integrity is crucial for improving the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Addressing current challenges requires innovative approaches to crime prevention, particularly through community engagement and technology. These efforts should consistently focus on community participation, accountability, and transparency. By fostering collaboration and adapting to the evolving needs of society, the police can position themselves as trustworthy partners in maintaining public safety. The future of policing will hinge on these three foundational pillars: integrity, innovation, and collective responsibility. Boosting the number of police officers in line with the police-to-public ratio is essential to alleviate fatigue and reduce the pressure on current officers. Other pressing concerns include addressing knife and hate crimes, as well as fostering healthy relationships among individuals from various communities and ethnicities.
At the John Harris Memorial Lecture, I reflected on our ongoing mission to rebuild public trust, transform policing culture, and drive forward reform. We must lead with integrity, innovate in tackling crime, and be accountable to the communities we serve. Together, we can reshape the future of policing. https://lnkd.in/eAPZkehb

Today marks the 4th anniversary of the death of George Floyd. His tragic murder was an important reminder of the racial injustice that still faces our country and the urgent need to address it. It’s more important than ever to fight for a fair, equitable, nondiscriminatory and inclusive economy, financial system and financial industry. That requires financial reform and financial regulation as well as investor and consumer protections. Those are the means to achieve some of the most important social, political and economic goals facing the country, including a financial system that supports the real economy, jobs and communities.

The anger and hate directed towards Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives often stem from a perception that these efforts are unfairly targeting certain groups, leading to feelings of threat, loss of privilege, or a misunderstanding of what DEI aims to achieve, particularly among individuals from historically dominant groups who may feel their status is being undermined; this can manifest as resistance to change, accusations of reverse discrimination, and a belief that DEI is promoting "political correctness" over meritocracy. In Austin, Texas, stickers bearing the message "exclusively for white people" have surfaced on businesses, prompting a strong reaction from Mayor Steve Adler. The mayor denounced the act as ignorant and offensive, emphasizing that Austin is a city built on respect and inclusivity for all individuals. Mayor Adler affirmed the city's commitment to maintaining this ethos, ensuring that respect for all remains a fundamental aspect of Austin's identity. The legacy must continue
#OnThisDay in #history, 1963, John F. Kennedy was assassinated. His life was cut short. But his aspirations were not. Inspired in part by his legacy, much of what #JFK hoped was achieved within the decade, including Medicare, civil rights reform, and a man on the moon. As Lyndon Johnson said to #Congress upon entering office, "Let us begin. Let us continue." Or as Kennedy himself argued: "A man may die...but an idea lives on."
