The Times Higher Education World University Rankings has listed 79 Iraqi universites, ranking two of them in the range 1,001-1,200 worldwide, 3 in the range 1,201-1,500, and a further 16 in the category 1,501+.
The remaining 58 universities were listed with 'recorder' status, meaning that they submitted data but did not meet the eligibility criteria for inclusion in the table.
A statement from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research said, "twenty-two Iraqi universities obtained top scores in the ranking", which could be considered an overstatement the country's achievements.
The two Iraqi universites scoring best were:
University of Sulaimani
University of Technology
They were followed by:
Salahaddin University-Erbil
University of Anbar
University of Duhok
The THE rankings take the top institutions in the world, and look at their performance across all of their core objectives: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

- World University Rankings 2025_
IUB has achieved a significant milestone in the prestigious THE World University Rankings (WUR) 2025. IUB is pleased to announce its enhanced global ranking, progressing from the 1001-1200 bracket to the esteemed 801-1000 tier. Nationally, IUB secured an impressive 10th position among 47 participating Pakistani universities.
IUB's remarkable performance has been boosted by substantial enhancements in three key areas;
1. Research Quality: Notable advancements in citation impact, research strength, research excellence, and research influence.
2. International Outlook: Increased global diversity among staff, students, and research collaborations.
3. Teaching: Enhanced learning environment.
These achievements are a testament to the firm dedication and expertise of our faculty members, who have played a pivotal role in conducting high-quality research that has significantly elevated IUB's ranking.
Prof. Dr. Asadullah Madni, Director, Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC), commended the collective efforts of the QEC team, faculty, and administration. "We extend our deepest gratitude to our faculty members for their tireless efforts in pursuing innovative research, mentoring students, and fostering a vibrant academic community. Their commitment to excellence has not only enhanced IUB's reputation but also inspired a new generation of scholars”, he stated.
While IUB has excelled in research, it recognizes the need for improvement in industry engagement. To enhance its ranking further, the university will prioritize increasing liaison with industry partners, fostering collaborations, and boosting industrial income in the coming year.

While I don't necessarily buy into the university league tables*, this can be considered a great success against all odds, and I feel like sharing it with my contacts. 🎓 🎉 🎊
*The reason why I find league tables irrelevant is that you cannot compare on equal footing the US universities on steroids with a Turkish state university that has only a fraction of their budget, at least twice as many students, half as many (underpaid) academics with (substantially) more teaching workload, and (admittedly very bright) graduate students under constant peer-pressure to move abroad to greener pastures hence with suboptimal focus. This is precisely why this year's QS ranking for METU is a big success.
According to the results of the 2025 World University Rankings by the higher education rating organization Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Middle East Technical University ranked 285th on the list, which evaluated 5,663 universities globally.
With this ranking, METU once again placed first among all universities in Türkiye.
According to the 2025 results, METU reached the highest achievement level of all time by ranking in the top 18.96% of universities listed in the QS World University Rankings.

Which Test Should You Take for a PhD Abroad?
This is a question I hear often from ambitious students planning their academic journeys.
Here’s the bottom line: whether you should take the GRE or GMAT largely depends on your field of study.
📍 For most disciplines—sciences, engineering, or humanities—the GRE is typically the go-to. It's widely accepted and tailored for diverse academic fields.
📍 For business or management PhDs, the GMAT often takes precedence, as it's specifically designed to measure skills relevant to these areas. Some programs might even list it as mandatory.
The golden rule?
👉 Always research the requirements of your target programs. Dive into their official websites, review program-specific eligibility criteria, and make an informed decision. This step will save you time and ensure your preparation is laser-focused.
Thinking about Ivy League PhDs? Be meticulous about the prerequisites, as top institutions are particular about test scores and other qualifications.

USP is among the 0.6% best universities in the world, according to the 2024 edition of the ranking prepared by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), a consultancy in the United Arab Emirates, which evaluated 20,966 institutions. USP was ranked 117th and, although it dropped eight positions compared to last year's ranking, it continues to be the best-rated institution in Ibero-America.
Following India’s recent success in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar, Chair of the FICCI Higher Education Committee and Pro-Chancellor of SYMBIOSIS INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY, explores the value Indian institutions, and their prospective students, can find in university rankings.
"We must acknowledge the positive impact of ranking and accreditation frameworks. Due to these metrics, Indian universities are now more focused on improving their infrastructure, facilities, faculty quality, and curriculum, so they can compete on the national and international stage.
Rankings have helped Indian institutions to specialise in their areas of interest and establish niche centres of excellence."

This video exchanges the views on “360-degree Contributions: What is expected from a faculty in HEIs in the era of 21st century-NEP2020?”
In a Higher Education Institution (HEI), faculty refers to the teaching and administrative staff, including those with academic ranks like professors, associate professors, assistant professors, lecturers, and instructors. They are responsible for various core academic functions, such as: a) Teaching: Delivering lectures, conducting seminars, and guiding students' learning; b) Research: Conducting original research, publishing papers, and securing grants and c) Service: Contributing to the institution's administration, serving on committees, and engaging in community outreach.
Faculty members are the intellectual backbone of an HEI, shaping the future of education and research.
Faculty as a soft and hard entity of the academic system has a great role to play in the institution building. This touches curriculum, quality of teaching, conducting impactful/ high quality research, coordination, counselling, fund generation, resource utilization, brand creation, and building the culture.
In the 21st century, shaped by NEP 2020, higher education institutions (HEIs) expect faculty to contribute in a 360-degree manner, transcending traditional roles of teaching and research.
This video discusses the key roles and responsibilities of a faculty in the era of 21st century – NEP2020 towards a vibrant and impactful academic environment.
