I think I was a fan of Paul Smith before I met Joey, but once we met, Floral Street was always a first stop on our trips to London. There was something about Paul Smith's approach to design that was unlike anything else I felt before. We wanted to be Paul Smith people -- not for any kind of status, but because of how the brand made us feel. And we felt the same way when the 16th Street store opened in NYC.
This morning, I listened to my favorite podcast, Time Sensitive, hosted by Spencer Bailey, and the episode was with Paul Smith.
Wow. While I haven't thought about the brand in years (times and tastes change), what I heard was a person of inspiration, a person with vision and a person, despite his company being almost a half century old, for today.
Just three soundbites, although you should listen to each and every episode and subscribe to The Slowdown:
"It's never been a business motivated by making money. It's been a business motivated by having a great day and really enjoying ourselves."
"Getting older, I think the key thing is not being too proud or silly to think you can't relinquish some of the points of your business to younger staff and trying to observe the talent of younger people around you. And then really bringing them in to have bigger jobs."
"I think the whole world is moving so fast that I don’t think we consider many things enough anymore. And I don’t think we appreciate every day like we should. And I don’t think we appreciate simple things like conversation, love, touch, emotion, calm hobbies. What’s so lovely there is that they really respect experience. So with an older person, yes, you might not be able to walk very well or you might be hard of hearing, but they really respect that you’ve led a life which is to do with a certain job or a certain way of life, or you’ve brought your family up in a certain way, and it’s really charming and lovely, really great."
Words to work and live by.
