We’re excited to share a new peer-reviewed paper, co-authored with our partner The Villages Health System, LLC, a fully at-risk health system serving Florida retirement communities. The research emphasizes the power of remote behavioral health screenings to surface hidden risk. Building on our recent case study, the paper demonstrates how NeuroFlow’s remote, digital assessments can identify behavioral health needs sooner and surface patients who go undetected when screened in-clinic. Surfacing these “hidden risk” patients is significant because instead of allowing these individuals to escalate, The Villages Health can immediately enroll them in their successful integrated care program – an initiative that has been proven to reduce healthcare costs 39% PMPM. We’re honored to advance this important research alongside The Villages Health so that we can help more people access behavioral health care when they need it most. Given the rise in the rates of behavioral health conditions, many state officials are looking for ways to track spending on behavioral health treatment in order to measure workforce needs, improve care, set investment targets, and more. In a new report, Vinayak Sinha, Emma Rourke, Mary Jo Condon, and William Brandel of Freedman HealthCare offer recommendations for a standardized state methodology to measure how much payers spend on behavioral health clinical services in a way that allows for comparability across states. The methodology is supported by a detailed code set that identifies which diagnoses, providers, services and treatments, and settings to include in the spending calculation. “As California embarks on statewide measurement and reporting of behavioral health spending, this standardized approach will provide important guidance,” says Margareta Brandt, MPH, assistant deputy director of health system performance in the Office of Health Care Affordability at the California Department of Health Care Access and Information. The methodology, which includes claims and non-claims payments, draws on approaches used by three states — Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island — that currently measure spending across the clinical care continuum. It was designed with input from an advisory group of state behavioral health leaders and subject matter experts.

NeuroFlow’s Robert Capobianco contributed a great article to Behavioral Health Tech on redefining “access to care” in behavioral health. Since the height of the pandemic, health plans in particular have invested significant resources in increasing behavioral health access through teletherapy and other technologies. Today, we’re entering a new phase of access: quality evaluation. Looking at all these investments, what’s actually working? Is the access connecting individuals to quality care? As healthcare costs continue to rise, these questions will only grow in importance. Learn how health plans can leverage holistic data analytics and measurement strategies to better identify behavioral health needs and understand program impact. Even in states that have proper behavioral healthcare, many people still lack access to this life-changing and life-saving care. However, there are ways that those of us in the behavioral health field can increase access to care for people who need it. This piece by Julie Wertheimer and Brandee Izquierdo, Ph.D. shares 4 different strategies we can use, and all four can be facilitated by implementing a technology infrastructure designed to support them. Whether it is time-sensitive coordination of care across providers, addressing people's complex needs across multiple sectors, or scaling up pilot programs, all can be aided with software programs like the ones BHL and similar developers have designed. Even the last strategy--being creative with funding streams--can be significantly aided through seamless data collection and reporting capabilities that are essential aspects of these technologies. Check this article out and think about how you are using technologies in your system to implement these strategies! #CrisisCare #AccessibleCare #BehavioralHealth

It is hard to overstate the enormity of the behavioral care access crisis. Only about a third of those with behavioral disorders access services by one estimate, and in SAMHSA’s 2023 survey, 5% of people with SUDs received care. Many end treatment prematurely. Few with sub-clinical problems get preventive care. Yet, we promote the same failing solutions when alternatives exist. Imagine a PCP who treats every new case of hypertension with medication and never considers options like stress management or changes in diet, exercise, and sleep. This failure mirrors the inflexibility and unresponsiveness of behavioral healthcare's delivery system. People seeking outpatient services get psychotherapy or medication, even if they prefer less intensive services. Hour-long therapy sessions should not be the minimum psychosocial service. Therapists began decades ago to fine-tune brief visits (averaging 20 minutes) in the primary care setting, and many people respond well to them—including those disliking the intensity of traditional therapy episodes. Our behavioral workforce is unprepared for such a delivery model today, but we can prioritize this as a goal. People like being seen in primary care—it is more accessible, less intense, and less stigmatizing. See more 200-word essays on my website: https://lnkd.in/gTy5xZmR

Big News from Care Predictor! We’re excited to share that the National Institute for Behavioral Health (NIFBH) has validated the Care Predictor Index (CPI) as an effective tool for predicting therapeutic impact and improving clinical symptomatology among individuals who completed treatment. In June 2024, the NIFBH conducted a pilot study at Alter Behavioral Health, analyzing the correlation between therapist CPI scores and clinical outcomes. The findings were remarkable! The study indicates that the CPI is a strong predictor of the Therapeutic Alliance and, consequently, has a significant impact on clinical outcomes. Since 2023, CPI has been implemented at Alter Behavioral Health during hiring and bi-annual evaluations, resulting in meaningful and transformative self-discovery, personal growth and professional development. Key Insights: CPI Scores & Client Outcomes: Higher CPI scores are linked to better client-reported outcomes. Consistency Across Diverse Groups: Outcomes were consistent across various levels of care, demographics, and treatment statuses. Significant Clinical Improvement: A CPI score greater than or equal to 84 was associated with statistically significant greater patient improvement, with a 7.5% decrease in PHQ-9 scores and a 4.1% decrease in GAD-7 scores. This validation from the NIFBH underscores CPI's role in enhancing the Therapeutic Alliance and ensuring that everyone under our care receives the highest standard of mental health support. We’re committed to continuing our work to ensure the best possible outcomes for every client on their healing journey! #MentalHealth #TherapeuticAlliance #CarePredictorIndex #ClinicalExcellence #AlterBehavioralHealth #CPI #NIFBH #TherapistImpact #PatientCare #MentalWellness
