Cannes. The damn prize still gives me chills. It’s been years, but this season drags me back to those nights of blood, sweat, and madness. Feels good to remember the win, the grind, the sheer rawness of it all. Released on International Women’s Day, “Push” wasn’t just another film. It was a shout into the void about the staggering crisis of maternal mortality. I tried to walk away from the advertising industry years ago. Selling ego, selling greed, selling things that harm the world. But sometimes, this beast of an industry sells something worthwhile. Awareness. Change. On thinking twice about what we amplify and using the power of our platforms, responsibly: In the culture war for hearts and minds, what impact would changing perceptions have on the world? Sorry but not sorry, but we need fewer amateur press offices who just propagate what's already in the mainstream news, and more curious and critical thinkers who don't get caught up in the calculated emotion of what makes it into the billionaire owned press. Destruction is loud. Creation is quiet. Reclaiming cognitive sovereignty to be able to spot the growing of the new amid the crumbling of the old, is essential. Instead of amplifying the monsters of this world, whether orange with ear bandaging or otherwise, what if we amplified positive images / themes surrounding troubled topics and regions? I once believed my film spoke to a select few, until I uncovered a universal truth about belonging. 🌍 In 2016, I set out to create a film for first-gen Latinos... hoping to touch the hearts of my own community. But what followed was a profound realization: the feeling of not belonging is a universal human issue. As a filmmaker, co-producer, and co-director, my goal was to show that no one is alone in their experience. But I soon found my work resonated far beyond my community. Screenings opened my eyes to the broader human struggle with loneliness. Stepping beyond my comfort zone, I faced imposter syndrome — could I bridge this gap without an advanced degree or research title? Yet, the stories of countless individuals I met on the road affirmed my belief and grounded my work. With courage, I pivoted to a concept brewing for years. I launched a new brand, High Quality Human™, to connect people on a deeper level and tackle the loneliness epidemic. The lesson? Solving big problems starts with the courage to act, even when self-doubt whispers, "Who am I to make a difference?" I’ve read this story across several different newsfeeds (especially as this one is occasionally just out to wind people up) and at each one have felt an increasing sense of despair. Here we have a young woman, Sydney Sweeney, who is at the start of her career and seemingly doing well. She’s had some great reviews for her work and is clearly becoming a recognised and sought out figure. Good for her. She was excellent in White Lotus by the way….in my opinion. She’s setting a standard, becoming something of a role model and a person who will inspire others of her generation. And really that’s where this should continue to stay. Yes, her latest film is up for critique and everyone has a view that they are entitled to. Some films bomb and others soar. Again it’s opinion. But then when you read such personal attacks like this on her looks especially, as well as her work I begin to worry. There is a mental health crisis across our world and our young people are crying out for people to believe in them, to give them support, to encourage them, show them the way and to create opportunities for them. There’s also a need for setting standards, defusing so much of the hate and creating a kinder culture. The world is a brutal proving ground and these days there is little margin or time given for development. Mistakes and errors of any nature are seen as complete failure and thus people get written off. Perfection is a growing cancer and one that frightens me immensely, not only as a father but as a citizen of this planet. So in this case you could find that this young lady faces extreme trial by media caused by this one person who seemingly has the monopoly of wisdom on looks and talent. The media are also only too quick to build people up to then knock them down. This one paper in particular. And then we get to consequences where her confidence, desire and well being are battered by everyone piling in. I hope she has good people around her who can convince her to keep going and ignore the unnecessary and cruel noise that has emerged that could well be generated by jealousy. Shame on you Carol Baum for failing to accept your responsibility as a leader, not only in industry and also in life.
