In the early days of Chili Piper, your onboarding started with reading Paul Graham’s essay How to Start a Startup. The most important section, in my opinion, is about the people you hire. “One of the best tricks I learned during our startup was a rule for deciding who to hire. Could you describe the person as an animal?“ Now, what I’ve learned is as a startup grows into a scale up and beyond…you don’t necessarily *need* animals. In fact, it’s a privilege and a true sign of success to not have to be on the hunt for these elusive creatures. Animals likely aren’t a culture fit for the company at that stage. They’ll feel inhibited. They will find those new “necessary for growth” processes menial. And what’s worse? They know a fellow animal when they see one and most certainly know when someone isn’t an animal. By definition they’re a different breed and where one animal can inspire and lead, another can be protective and lack patience for those slowing down the pack. I am so grateful for the industry animals I’ve had the opportunity to learn and grow alongside. And the fierce Tiger Team I’ve found myself on at AudiencePlus 🩷

Invest in a solid startup, give them some time and eventually watch them invest right back! At SxSW last year, I met a young entrepreneur who over breakfast sold me on the why behind his innovative product. I saw the vision of the founders and love the way they think. Their strong environmental and social impact resonated with me as an entrepreneur and investor and I became an angel for their company a few weeks later.
