Challenges in bringing back transit riders after COVID - and already declining ridership prior to COVID - will lead to a $730 million annual "fiscal cliff" beginning in 2026 after federal emergency funds are expended. New and innovative strategic plans from RTA and Metra, CMAP's Plan of Action for Regional Transit, and legislation sponsored by State Sen. Ram Villivalam and Rep. Eva-Dina Delgado to consolidate the RTA and its three service boards are all bold steps to leverage the moment to fundamentally rethink how we deliver mobility in Northeast Illinois. When people ask me about upcoming major infrastructure projects and improvements, I always let them know that the inconvenience of roadway construction is well worth the improvements when everything is completed.
SCDOT has been awarded $175 million by the Federal Highway Administration to replace four bridges on Interstate 95 over Lake Marion. The grant will allow the four bridges, originally constructed in 1968, with narrow shoulders and roadway approaches, to be rebuilt into one bridge with two 12-foot travel lanes in both the southbound and northbound direction. The project would provide a barrier-separated bicycle and pedestrian path. The project will also provide space for a potential future additional travel lane in each direction with a 10-foot minimum inside shoulder and a 12-foot outside shoulder in each direction. Did you know? According to the Texas Association of Counties, 46% of all roadway surface in Texas is maintained by county road & bridge precincts. Every level of government, from the federal to the municipal, helps to fund, construct, and maintain roadways. County road & bridge precincts, however, represent the largest component in maintaining a suitable transportation network in the State of Texas. In Tax Year 2023, Ellis County citizens contributed 17 cents on the dollar to each of our county’s four road & bridge precincts, as well as a separate component of the tax rate for farmer-to-market (FM) roads. Ellis County coordinates with the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) and the Regional Transportation Council (RTC), as well as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), for any projects that reach regional importance. Across the country, highways that were built decades ago now need modernization to serve the needs of growing and changing communities. Over time, many of these roads have become badly mismatched to the way that people use them today, as they serve commercial areas, residential neighborhoods, industrial districts, or areas with an evolving mix of uses. Join USDOT Deputy Secretary Polly Trottenberg and Representative Earl Blumenauer and national and local experts on July 31 at 3:00-4:15 p.m. ET to explore case studies, resources, and Federal funding opportunities that can support the modernization of Legacy Highways as a way to improve safety, spur development and affordable housing investment, and provide better access for everyone using the road. #USDOT

Proposals for draconian cuts to DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) would be devastating for the Dallas region. DART's value as an economic and mobility asset has become more apparent under the visionary leadership of President & CEO Nadine S. Lee (A Downtown Dallas, Inc. Board of Governors member) over the past three-plus years. A recent University of North Texas economic impact study found that 31 transit-oriented projects in the DART service area generated nearly $1 billion in direct spending between 2019 and 2021 and spurred nearly 11,000 new jobs. Lee and her team have also made strategic investments to enhance the rider experience and ensure that safety, cleanliness, and reliability are at the forefront. DART is now carrying over 80% of pre-pandemic ridership levels, ahead of the national average of 76%. Bus and rail service cancellations and missed trips are now at less than one percent -- down from 15 percent just two years ago. Thank you to Ruben Landa and the Greater Dallas Planning Council for pushing back on the short-sighted effort to defund DART. https://lnkd.in/gf3kRYAM
Plan to cut DART funding should be stopped in its tracks

If you've been connected with me for any time on here, you know I'm big on advancing awareness about the critical resources we often take for granted -- and the part we must play in ensuring those resources are responsibly developed and available when we need them. For a long time, that meant talking about mineral resources. But today, the resource I'm focused on is transportation. How often do you think about it? How often do you complain about it? Our ability to safely and efficiently get from point A to point Z is critical, but it always takes public dollars and good planning (including public input!) for the public transportation network to fulfill that purpose. That's why I'm inviting all my connections in Pima County to participate in this short survey. It's a key opportunity to weigh in on the draft of a 20-year regional transportation plan that is soon to be finalized for eventual voter consideration. Please take the survey and share within your own networks too. #transportation #PimaCounty

Some of us on the OneSTL communications team take transit regularly - but not all of us. Transit isn't always available where we are going, or the added travel time can be too great. #DumpthePump Day on June 20 is a great time to try transit, and new transit riders can sign up for a free transit pass for the month of July here: https://lnkd.in/ghvtnzQW If you wish transit were different in your area, you can join other voices calling for change, like Citizens for Modern Transit. You can also voice your support for transit during local planning processes in your area.
