TURNING STOPS INTO SPACES | Rail is a vital piece of the transport puzzle for any liveable city. It’s sustainable and efficient. It reduces traffic congestion. It promotes social inclusion by providing accessible transport. In short, rail ticks a lot of boxes. As building services engineers with decades of experience in rail, we approach station design as building designers first. That means that we imagine a station that's more than just a stop on your journey—it's a vibrant destination where people connect, relax and thrive. In his article, ‘It’s people who make a station a destination’, Director Ashley Merrett explores how thoughtful design and innovative engineering are turning stations into essential community spaces. 🚇 Design Decisions from the 1800s Are Making Our Subways Unbearably Hot Today! Ever wondered why subway stations feel like saunas during summer? It's not just you—it's a design problem dating back almost two centuries. A fascinating article revealed how early subway engineers, mesmerized by "magical" electric trains, completely overlooked ventilation. In London's Underground, tunnels were designed so narrowly that heat from: • Train braking • Solar radiation • Even surrounding clay Gets trapped, turning stations into urban heat islands! Key takeaways for designers and engineers: ✅ Always design with long-term scalability ✅ Anticipate future technological and environmental changes ✅ Consider user experience beyond immediate constraints Innovations are emerging—like regenerative braking and using tunnel heat to warm homes—but retrofitting remains challenging. Design isn't just about today; it's about creating sustainable solutions for decades to come. What design challenges have you seen that seemed "innovative" at first but created long-term problems? Vox is a £70m build-to-rent scheme project that has transformed a disused industrial site in Castlefield, Manchester, into a highly-sustainable development. It’s been described as one of the city's most exciting buildings, bringing a sleek, retro and rather Scandinavian vibe to the city. A ten-minute walk from the city centre, the 280-apartment scheme includes a ground floor convenience store, landscaped public realm and a roof-top running track. For our net zero benchmarking study on Vox, Glenbrook challenged us to review the existing, already high-performing design principles and take an even more forensic approach to evidence the building’s whole life embodied carbon footprint. We found that a further 24% reduction in whole-life emissions could still be viably achieved with targeted areas for improvement, predominantly through air source heat pumps, greater focus on occupancy behaviour, and offsetting emissions off site. The paradox of modern transportation is that while we can move faster thanks to cars, everything around us seems to get farther away. Known as the Red Queen Effect, this phenomenon means that despite increased speeds, urban sprawl and the need for more infrastructure have led to greater distances between key locations. Cars, while efficient for individual travel, result in higher costs, more pollution, and significant energy waste. Historically, as transportation improved, cities expanded to accommodate new modes, but access to essential services remained unchanged or worsened. A shift towards more energy-efficient transportation, like electric bikes, could improve accessibility and reduce environmental impact, offering a more sustainable urban design. Rethinking Urban Landscapes: The Art of Building Relocation As cities continue to evolve, we're faced with the challenge of balancing growth, preservation, and sustainability. Imagine a city where iconic buildings are repositioned to make way for vibrant parks, revitalizing urban cores and enhancing quality of life. Or, envision historically significant landmarks relocated to safer grounds, protected from the ravages of natural disasters. Building relocation, once considered a daunting task, is now a viable solution thanks to advancements in construction technology and precision engineering. By leveraging these innovations, we can breathe new life into urban landscapes, unlocking hidden potential and fostering more resilient communities. Consider the benefits of relocating a historic building from a coastal area prone to hurricanes or tsunamis to a safer inland location. Not only do we preserve cultural heritage, but we also reduce the risk of catastrophic damage. Similarly, repositioning buildings in urban cores can create space for green oases, mitigating the urban heat island effect and improving air quality. The process of building relocation involves meticulous assessment, planning, and execution. From hydraulic lifting systems to modular building techniques, modern technology has made it possible to transport entire structures with precision and care. This complex process requires collaboration between architects, engineers, and construction experts, pushing the boundaries of what's possible. As we reimagine our cities, building relocation offers a compelling solution for urban renewal. By embracing this innovative approach, we can celebrate cultural heritage while embracing progress, creating vibrant, sustainable communities for generations to come. Crossrail's win of the Stirling Prize marks a significant achievement, showcasing how architecture-led collaboration can lead to inclusive design. An impressive milestone on how transport infrastructure can consider needs and aspirations of cities. With over 700k people now using the service daily, one line from this article got my attention—after 3.5 years of delays and £4bn in overspending, these challenges seem to be forgotten once Crossrail is in use. While it may sound aspirational, I hope these lessons won’t be forgotten. It is not about pointing fingers at the public or private sector, but rather identifying what went wrong to ensure that on-going and future large projects are delivered more efficiently. https://lnkd.in/ejh7dVQQ #Crossrail #StirlingPrize
