My newly updated series, Merging Worlds, is a collection of double exposures that combines the architectural splendor of cityscapes with the tranquil beauty of landscapes. I'm carefully selecting and overlaying two contrasting images, that when blended together, work together in harmony to showcase the interconnectedness between humanity and the natural world. Despite their apparent differences, cities and nature are inextricably linked, constantly influencing and shaping one another. In this series, I seek to blur the line between reality and imagination by creating new worlds that are both familiar and surreal. Beyond their visual allure, these merged worlds are meant to inspire introspection about our place in the world, our impact on the environment, and the delicate balance between modern civilization and the timeless beauty of nature.

Authentic contemporary connection to place is deeply problematic. The sense of interconnected inhabitation, developed through centuries of close and intimate settlement with the land and our ancestors, was lost with the embrace of modernity and all it offered. We were absorbed with the great rewards that modernity could bring to our lives, but at the same time, there remains a sense of melancholic loss for what could not be regained. Modernity offered us the entire world, an extraordinary expanse of technological possibilities and freedom but left us with a sense of perpetual displacement. It seems only tenuous connections can be made within the speed, breadth and sweep of modernity. We are left with a sense of homelessness, a longing for interconnection and a place in the world, a longing for a sense of community, and the inseparable cultural bonds that ground us. This recognition highlights an urgent need to rethink consciousness—not merely as a human attribute but as something extending beyond ourselves. In grappling with the ethical and environmental crises of our era, we confront questions about the value and definition of life itself.
