This election focuses on the future: starting a career as an apprentice, ensuring fair wages for hard work, and securing a fully funded pension for retirement. The choice is simple. Kamala Harris and Tim Walz will support working people, uphold union rights, and create jobs for Operating Engineers by rebuilding American infrastructure. If you're voting union, it's Harris-Walz. https://lnkd.in/g5TB3iZs

As part of their election pledge, the Conservatives have said that they would introduce National Service for 18 year olds. This idea will no doubt divide opinion amongst parents and younger people. I was however interested to read over the weekend about the scheme in some Scandinavian countries. Everyone is conscripted to do National Service in the military but not everyone is successful in their application to serve. A small number of those who join up continue to serve with the military at the end of the 12 months. However the real winners are private sector employers who have the benefit of younger people who have already received some work related training provided by, and paid for, by the state. As employers are keen to employ those who have served; people want to serve in the military as it is such a useful addition for their CV. So rather than National Service being seen as something that young people don't want, it is seen as a positive. I wonder how the scheme might be received by employers in the UK, and whether military service will be seen as a 'desireable' in job ads of the future. A similar scheme might be adopted by a future government if it is seen as providing opportunities and development for younger people who are keen to participate.

Veterans’ Relief Yesterday's budget was a tough one; the highest ever tax raid with the OBR telling us that they don't predict it will generate much growth. However, the government is extending the employer NICs relief for employers hiring qualifying veterans for a further year from 6 April 2025 until 5 April 2026. This means that businesses will continue to pay no employer NICs up to annual earnings of the Veterans Upper Secondary Threshold of £50,270 for the first year of a veteran’s employment in a civilian role. Remember this when you are talking to potential employers and also when you are negotiating your salary following a job offer! #joboffers #salarynegotiations #militaryresettlement #forcestransition #jobapplications

What are your thoughts? Does the House's plan for an up to 15% pay increase for Junior service members make sense? Is it warranted? Deserved? I know this is a sensitive subject for some and others are afraid to share an opinion. It will be interesting to see what, if any, comments this post gets :)

It amazes me when Politicians complain about the fact that voters have opinions that they share to wake them up after 9 years of bad policy, bad ideas and quite simply bad leadership in #canada. If you don't have the stomach for Politics, can't do the job, can't handle the heat you can always resign in discrace and save the taxpayers from more of your bad ideas. It's hard to make $200,000 to $400,000 or more and to be held to account. Your employers are voters and taxpayers and these politicians should be resigning NOW. The current team of B or C players can always resign and refuse their "PENSIONS" and thier big salary this year! If you hate being a politician, you can always quit...... https://lnkd.in/gptvHPMj
