Health and safety guidelines and first aid have always been visible in workplaces, ensuring that you and your staff are working in a safe (and legal) environment. But what about mental health first aid? Poor mental health accounts for more than half of all work-related illnesses. With around 51% of long-term sick leave being due to stress, depression, or anxiety, it has never been more important to ensure that you have the right people and processes in place to support your employees. We're passionate about performance through people, and can offer online training in mental health awareness, training to become a Mental Health First Aider or an MHFA refresher course. "This Mental Health Awareness Week, we're spotlighting Tom Chandler, our Site Manager and one of our Mental Health First Aiders, who not only ensures physical safety but also champions mental well-being for our team, making our sites a supportive space for open discussions. “While we consistently prioritise physical safety on our sites, as a Mental Health First Aider, I highlight the importance of taking care of our mental wellbeing. As a mental health first aider, I’m trained to notice the less visible signs of distress among our team. Whether it’s a change in behavior, a drop in productivity, or reluctance to engage, these can be indicators that someone needs support. It’s important to ensure that everyone feels secure enough to share their concerns and seek help without hesitation. Mental health first aid is vital - it’s about being present, listening, and signposting people towards the right resources. Just as we maintain our site safety, we must also offer mental health support, maintaining both the physical and psychological safety of our workplace." #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #MentalHealthFirstAider #Team

Mental health is becoming more important than ever, especially in today’s fast-paced world. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend Safe Minds, Safe Workplaces: Psychological First Aid Training for Philippine Organizations from Formidea Business Consultancy and Learning Services Inc. and it really opened my eyes to how we can support each other better, not only at work but in our everyday lives. The training focused on practical tools to help us provide Psychological First Aid (PFA) in times of need. This kind of knowledge is becoming more important, and one day, it might even be required in workplaces—just like safety standards are today. One important takeaway from this session is that, as first responders for mental health, we are also subject to what is called common stress reactions. It’s a reminder that while we help others, we must also take care of our own mental and emotional well-being to stay ready and prepared when addressing concerns. After all, we need to be mentally and emotionally equipped to face any situation we encounter and assist others effectively. As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s all take the time to learn more about mental health and how we can make our workplaces and communities more supportive and caring. Even small actions can make a big difference for someone who may be struggling silently. Let’s create safer, more mindful environments, one step at a time. #MentalHealthAwareness #PsychologicalFirstAid #SafeWorkplaces #MentalHealthMatters #weallcanhelp

Mental Health Awareness Week is drawing to a close. It's a good time to reflect on how we support our staff. We have 8 mental health first aiders - our teams know who they are and how they can support them. It’s part of our commitment to looking after our people and they are integral to our culture. It’s important in any sector but particularly in manufacturing which ranks in the bottom 10% of UK industries for wellbeing. Our director Sean Smith said: “Looking after our colleagues’ wellbeing has always been high on our agenda. “Our mental health first aiders are a key part of that - from the shopfloor to the directors there is someone our team can go to. “Everyone needs someone to talk to at times, knowing that our MHFAs are there means that colleagues have instant access to someone trained to support them when they do.” #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

Mental Health First Aiders, can you answer this question? If someone is displaying the following symptoms, what could be causing it? ➡️Quiet and withdrawn ➡️Wearing long clothing in warm environments ➡️Avoiding social situations ➡️Rapid changes in mood ➡️Low self-esteem ➡️Avoiding eye contact What could be causing this? Scroll down for the answer. . . . If you said self-harm, you would be correct. If you said domestic abuse, you would also be correct. If you said neurodiversity, yup, correct again. This is why it’s so important that we don’t jump to conclusions or make assumptions. It’s also why it’s vital that we’re not trying to diagnose what’s happening. Instead, we use what is spoken about to inform our response, our safeguarding approach, and what signposting (if any) might be most helpful. Mental health first aid doesn’t end when you get the certificate. To be effective and safe in the role, we need to keep learning, refreshing, and practicing. I’ve trained thousands in mental health first aid and other wellbeing topics. If you’d like someone to help transform wellbeing in your workplace, I’d love to connect. Let’s create a safer, more supportive environment together. #MentalHealthFirstAid #WellbeingInWork
